“Red Alert! “by Excelia the first metaverse entirely designed by a management school

This November 9th, unrest rises in front of the bay windows of Excelia’s XL factory, a physical and innovative place open to all (students, teachers, partners) whose vocation is to bring transformations to better communicate them in the premises. Students in year 3e year on the Bachelor of Tourism & Hospitality Management are preparing to take their first course there in Metaverse “ Red alert ! », entirely designed by Excelia.

A unique immersive learning experience for students

It was the first for the students in year 3e year of Bachelor Tourism & Hospitality Management. The second session of their course Standards and certifications in the hotel industry took place equipped with virtual reality headsets and immersed in the universe of the asynchronous Metaverse “ Red alert ! “. Controlling a luxury hotel complex, they are faced with a serious incident (the drowning of a client) and must coordinate a response to the crisis in accordance with the rules and intervention procedures previously studied in progress. Captured by particularly realistic graphics and immersed in a atmosphere where the stress of a crisis situation prevails, the students are tasked with coordinating the efforts, in the skin of the manager. Based on the scenario designed by the Excelia teaching team, they are faced with choices. Thanks to virtual reality, they interact with the various actors (hotel staff and customers, rescuers, etc.), move around the hotel complex and are confronted with decision-making, a teaching process that has won great enthusiasm among the students.

Educational sequences that complement face-to-face lessons with relevance

The integration of Metaverses into Excelia courses pursues the goal of providing students with experiences that they cannot achieve either in class or in practice. Operational handling of a serious crisis is an opportunity they rarely encounter in their learning situations. However, they must be prepared to meet them. This is the possibility that this Metaverse offers” Red alert ! “. Students are introduced to the implementation of an intervention procedure. Thanks to virtual reality, they are in a responsible position and develop” do “, operational skills, such as those covered by “ Red alert »:

  • Assess the seriousness of an incident to appropriately trigger an emergency plan (called Code Rouge/Red Alert),
  • Apply the coordination step of the procedure “ code red » in accordance with a QHSE management approach (quality, health, safety, environment),
  • Convey sufficient information to employees under stress,
  • Coordinate a post-crisis response appropriate to the severity and consequences of the incident.

An exercise carried out by small groups, which is part of an educational process

The Metaverses offered by Excelia enrich the pedagogical palette available to teachers and are part of a pedagogical progression. Done in groups of 4 to 16 students, the sequence “ Red alert comes after a theoretical course of 21 hours on Standards and certifications in the hotel industry and before a Master Class. The latter aims to make students think about the interest in standards and intervention procedures for a responsible manager.

The educational added value of this exercise is considerable. The data collected during the immersive experience allows us to analyze the reflexes and errors that students make. The subsequent discussion with them is thus nourished by factual data and no longer by the mere intuition of their understanding that we had until now. Thanks to this scenario and data learning “who have come out of it, we very appropriately go through the theoretical teaching together with the students. The recommendations and advice we give also have a greater impact on studentscomments Kevin Grandé, Excelia teacher-researcher.

An increase in the quality of scientifically assessed learning

Thanks to virtual reality devices, the long-term memory of information can be doubled. The first scientific studies show it. The immersive environment allows an unprecedented simulation of the students. Their attention is totally captured and the anchoring of knowledge is better. To assess it more precisely, Excelia, together with the implementation of Metaverses in its courses, has launched a study program in neuroscience. It is led by Caroline O’Neill, Excelia educational engineer: Virtual reality plays on the emotional lever and makes it possible to develop skills that cannot be developed in any other way. She has a great interest in the pedagogical sequence of the lessons. The studies we carry out show that the quality of learning increases.

ILE®, quality benchmark for immersive educational experiences

To guarantee the quality of the immersive experiences offered to its students, Excelia has implemented a very strict quality standard. Called ILE® (as Immersive Learning Experience®), it combines three requirements:

  • Pedagogical: putting the student in a situation as an actor in the experience, psycho-cognitive preparation, limiting the duration of the experience to 20 mn.sthe alternation between passive phases and challenges (investigative approaches, problem solving, role playing…) in the experiments, stimulation of emotions, sound immersion in the context of the action…
  • Experiential: optimizing the experience, level of interactions, situational interest,

The immersive environment calls for situational interest: original, pleasant, fun, aesthetic… And in this type of immersive experience, the concept of space requires the design of a specific and innovative ergonomics of the user interfacesays Olivier Gautreau, head of innovative digital projects and project coordinator.
  • Technological: fast (less than 2 minutes) and simplified technical handling, creation of a dedicated and identifiable avatar, systemic interactivity of avatars with the virtual world, 3D/relief depth effect combined with a 360° view, virtual assistant of the type Prof “ Angel », visual quality and textures, maximum frame rate to avoid motion sickness…

The ILE® standard has been registered with INPI by Excelia.

Metaverses built exclusively by Excelia teams

Many Excelia teams are mobilized to design Metaverses: teaching staff to provide academic and business knowledge, digital transformation management on aspects of support for change and technological innovations, team of engineers pedagogical tools to sequence courses and evaluate the effect of the metaverse on learning. ..

Red alert ! » mobilized, for 5 months, 8 Excelia employees, supported by the technical contributions of a team of employees from the start-up Edtech 5Discovery, specialized in the design of 3D/VR training.

A co-construction approach that is essential to Excelia’s goal: to design immersive experiences that provide a precise answer in terms of skill development.

An achievement as part of the implementation of XL Vision’s digital transformation plan

Immersive learning, including Metaverses, is at the heart of the digital transformation led by Excelia. It particularly meets the desire to develop hybrid training, which combines physical and digital. XL Vision aims to reinvent the group’s education system through innovative and immersive pedagogy and to improve the experience of each of its stakeholders (students, partners, employees, companies and territories). Holistic and multi-campus, XL Vision is implemented over 5 years as part of Excelia’s 2020-25 strategic plan, which has allocated a budget of €8 million.

The implementation of this first Metaverse in Excelia courses provides a dual demonstration. On the one hand, it is imperative to think carefully about the design of the Metaverses so that they produce their full learning potential. On the other hand, the need to achieve the expected level of quality, to include the development and use of Metaverses in a collaborative approach that brings together students, faculty, educational and technological engineering teams. Anthony Hié, Excelia Digital Transformation Director.
