The EU organizes a gala for €387,000… Which gathers 5 people

A metaverse that failed to seduce. The European Commission’s humanitarian aid department proposed a gala this week to present its new virtual universe. But the latter attracted almost no one, and critics pointed to the exorbitant costs of this communications operation.

The desolate metaverse of the EU fails to convince

The European Union (EU) metaverse, called the Global Gateway, unveiled this virtual space on October 13. The short video had raised some questions – even some derision – from commenters:

Nevertheless, the European Commission intended to invite interested parties to a gala to promote this new space. The goal was to attract young people not politically engaged aged 18 to 35, especially those who visit TikTok and Instagram, to arouse their interest in the EU. But the flop was total for the EU metaverse, which only managed to attract 5 people:

After confused conversations with the other 5 human participants, I find myself all alone.»

$387,000 in expenses

The problem is that the European Commission’s department for humanitarian aid paid no less than $387,000 to develop this metaverse platform.

However, the blunder is not entirely unexpected: Vince Chadwick, the Devex journalist who went to this gala, had already received internal reactions to the project last November. On condition of anonymity, employees of the department had been particularly critical of the projectand thought he was rather “ashamed“.

Beyond the fun, the story is symptomatic of one thing: the difficulties that metaverse projects have. to attract users. We remember that the Meta machine also finds it difficult to seduce with its Horizon Worlds – to the extent of arousing the shareholders’ distrust. The question therefore arises: is it because these projects are poorly put together, or is the metaverse that we are being sold as the new frontier of the web less revolutionary than we think?
