that Maserati GranTurismo Coupe comes in one version battery electric.
The GranTurismo Folgore is the first car in Maserati’s history to adopt a 100% battery-electric propulsion system.
The GranTurismo Folgore illustrates the idea that Maserati has, for whom outstanding performance is still essential, of electric mobility.
The classic proportions of Maserati brand cars have been retained, with a long hood, a central body intersected by the three air vents and a central body intersected by the four wheel arches.
The roofline is lowered dynamically and emphasizes the curve of the pillar with the Trident logo.
Aesthetically, the GranTurismo’s unpretentious design represents the balance between beauty and functionality.
The lines and the clean shape emphasize the purity of the curves.
The specific grid on Folgore combines glossy black inserts to one lightly anodized silk black base. The splitter, handles, day opening bezel and boot handle are also gloss black, while the Folgore lettering, Trident logo, Maserati and GranTurismo lettering are dark copper.
The exterior of Folgore is characterized by 20 inch Aero rims at the front and 21 inches at the rearspecially designed to guarantee a maximum aerodynamics.
The Trident brand’s all-wheel drive battery-electric GranTurismo coupe combines outstanding performance with comfort suitable for long distances.
In terms of technical architecture, the GranTurismo makes great use of the battery-electric coupé lightweight materials such as aluminum and magnesium, as well as high-performance steel. More than 65% of the car’s shell is aluminium.
This approach is combined with the Atlantis High electrical/electronic platform, based on Can FD messages sent at rates of up to 2ms. The system comes with level 5 cyber security and flashing features along the way. The Vehicle Domain Control Module (VDCM), which includes software for 360° control of all the car’s most important systems, is the backbone of the optimal driving experience in all conditions.
Inside, the Maserati GranTurismo Folgore is equipped with the Maserati Intelligent (MIA) multimedia system, with a screen that groups the main functions into an integrated touchscreen, a digital clock and head-up display (optional).
The GranTurismo Folgore uses an electric powertrain and batteries.
The electric powertrain of the Folgore version is based on 800 volt technology, which is now the ultimate in performance and recharge time. It rests on three motors, one front and two rear, 300 kW permanent magnet which brings the installed capacity to more than 1,200 hp.
The electric motors reach higher power density levels (9.2 kW/kg) and are powered by a SiC (silicon carbide) inverter derived from Formula E.
The two rear motors, which are completely autonomous, with no transmission connecting the wheels, allow torque to be controlled independently on each side. This torque control at each wheel is known as torque vectoring.
Torque vectoring is a practice that allows the car’s yaw level to be adjusted not only during acceleration, but also when the driver lets off the accelerator or brakes. The system works in the same way that a sophisticated electronic differential would, except that in the case of the GranTurismo Folgore, the potential and level of control is significantly higher.
That battery has a nominal capacity of 92.5 kWh (83 kWh usable) and a discharge capacity of 560 kW, to continuously transmit a power of approximately 760 horsepower to the wheels.
GranTurismo Folgore evolves 560 kW and one 1350 Nm torque. The 2,260 kg GranTurismo Folgore reaches a maximum speed of 320 km/h on circuit and performs 0 to 100 km/h in 2.7 seconds and 0 to 200 km/h in 8.8 seconds.
Battery configurations and layout allow the Coupe’s height to be limited to 1,353mm without compromising its sporty character.
The shape of the battery pack, called “T-bone”, allows the battery modules to be installed mainly around the central tunnel and significantly lowers the car’s H-point compared to an installation under the seats.
The battery design increases the car’s maneuverability by reducing the inertia factor and making it fun to drive: all the masses are located near the roll axis and the inertia tensor is smaller.
Agility is one of the key factors, because a battery with axial geometry makes direction changes much faster compared to cars that have a flat battery, distributed under the entire hull.
The oversizing of the motors’ power in relation to the battery is an important factor for performance. It provides maximum flexibility in terms of torque distribution up to very high values.
The GranTurismo Folgore is able to unload 100% of the available power, even with only the rear axle in pure propulsion configuration (Rear-Wheel-Drive) or to unload up to 400 hp on a single rear wheel.
Thanks to the characteristics of the system in the GranTurismo Folgore, regeneration levels of up to 0.65 g are available to recover the braking energy that arrives in optimal conditions to reach a peak of 400 kW under load.
L’aerodynamically of GranTurismo Folgore has been the subject of careful care. The leveling air springs allow the car to adapt in the best way to the conditions of use: from driving on mixed roads to optimizing the efficiency of high speeds to maximizing the downforce of the Corsa driving mode. Level control together with the regulation of the air flows inside the engine compartment thanks to the air shutter allows active control of the aerodynamics. With its muscular silhouette, the GranTurismo Folgore achieves a drag coefficient (CD) of 0.26.
The Folgore electric version of the GranTurismo has four different driving modes : Max Range, GT, Sport, Corsa. The choice is made using the function selector on the steering wheel.
that Max Range mode maximizes the car’s range by employing energy-saving strategies. It is recommended when the battery state of charge drops below 16% and there is no charging station immediately available. It limits the top speed to 130 km/h, reduces the response to the accelerator pedal and limits the effect of the air conditioning.
that GT mode, which is the predefined driving mode when the vehicle is started, is the one that best conveys the balanced driving experience associated with “Grand Touring”. It is suitable for everyday driving and guarantees maximum driving pleasure and comfort without sacrificing the characteristic dynamism of the GranTurismo. In this condition, the effect of Folgore is limited to 80%. The sound is present but discreet.
that sports mode offers the best dynamic performance that ensures an exciting driving experience on everyday roads. The sound is amplified, the propulsion delivers performances that reach 100% and the configuration of the suspensions intensifies the driving dynamics. Torque vectoring minimizes understeer both when accelerating and releasing the accelerator, while traction control gives more room for control to the driver, who can choose to disable ESC.
that Corsa mode giving the driver the most extreme experience and the opportunity to fully taste the GranTurismo Folgore’s sporting soul and the performance of its electric propulsion system. It is designed for use on circuits. The car uses minimal control strategies that leave the driver free to test his driving skills. In this mode, the accelerator pedal becomes very direct and the torque is transferred very quickly by the three motors. Torque vectoring maximizes performance when entering, under and exiting corners. The suspension increases the level of damping and the car takes minimal ground clearance to maximize vertical aerodynamic load. The digital instrument cluster switches to the Corsa display to highlight the most useful elements for performance by, among other things, monitoring the development of the battery temperature, which is important for performance and the distribution of the torque in relation to the maximum. achievable accelerations.
In Corsa mode, additional functions accessed via the drive mode controls on the infotainment screen allow the driver to further adjust levels of torque vectoring and traction control, optimum conditions for wet performance, down to settings optimized for extreme operation.
Performance Optimizer allows for maximized performance by applying optimal performance management based on usage.
that Max boost maximizes acceleration performance.
In Sport or Corsa mode, the driver has the option to activate Start control using the “-” paddles and following the procedure indicated on the digital instrument cluster.
The motors’ braking level during the accelerator release phase (regeneration), which in addition to braking the car recovers energy by recharging the high-voltage battery, can be adjusted to four levels using the paddles and can be changed during driving as needed.
GranTurismo Folgore offers a “total audio experience delegated to software” thanks to in-depth studies by engineers at the Maserati Innovation Laboratory. The natural sound dynamics of electric motors driven by inverters have been modeled and digitally integrated with typical sound elements taken from the Maserati V8 soundtrack.
Naturally, there is no exhaust or aspiration on an electric car, and the acoustic tuning is delegated to powerful signal processing softwarewhich uses sophisticated synthesizers and high quality speakers inside and out.
The electric GranTurismo Folgore incorporates sustainable materials such as Econyl, a recycled nylon obtained by giving new life to waste and regenerating used fishing nets. Its flat, highly opaque surface, reminiscent of the fabric of diving suits, is laser machined to achieve a parametric pattern. Econyl inserts are present on the seats, ceiling and pillars.
At the level of the dashboard and panels, the leather has been printed with high frequency, a technology that comes from luxury leather goods.
With the charging application for Folgore electric models, the driver has access to more than 335,000 charging points in Europe, including more than 30,000 ultra-fast terminals.
On a 270 kW terminal, fast charging at 800 V can charge up to 100 km range in 5 minutes.
The GranTurismo Folgore was developed at the Maserati Innovation Lab and produced at the Mirafiori production center in Turin. Made in Italy, the GranTurismo Folgore epitomizes the “luxury Italian performance” of the Maserati models.
