With 64,780 units sold in August alone, the Tesla Model Y is now the best-selling electric car worldwide. But its Chinese rivals are not far behind… Tesla remains the undisputed leader in electric cars, ahead of BYD and Volkswagen.
Since its launch in 2020, the Tesla Model Y has continued to break sales records and has been a huge success with customers. So much so that it surpasses the already very popular Model 3, which in March 2022 was the best-selling car in Europe, all engines combined. But now it has been dethroned by the SUV in Europe, which it will be the best-selling electric model worldwide.
A great success for Model Y
In fact, according to the figures disclosed by the site CleanTechnica, the Tesla Model Y was the best-selling electric car in August, all countries combined, with no less than 64,780 units sold. By comparison, the Model 3 is ranked 5th with “only” 31,529 units sold in the same period worldwide.
Three Chinese cars separate the two models, namely BYD Song (42,522 copies) and Qin Plus (35,716 copies), as well as Wuling Hong Guang MINI EV (33,877). But these results should be taken with a grain of salt, as they also include sales of plug-in hybrid versions for the first two. According to sales figures published by BYD, the manufacturer sells about 50% hybrids and 50% 100% electric cars.
The position is slightly different when looking at the sales figures since the beginning of the year. However, it is once again the Tesla Model Y that comes first, with no less than 409,378 registered registrations worldwide. The electric SUV is followed by the Chinese city car Wuling Hong Guang MINI EV, with a total of 278,838 sales.
The Model 3 arrives on the 3rd step of the podium with 268,157 units sold. You then have to go down to the 8th place to see the first European car, the Volkswagen ID.4. This was placed 9th in the list of the best selling electric models in August.
BDY at the top of the podium (or almost)
If Tesla seems to dominate all the rankings, we note that this is not necessarily the case if we take a look at the manufacturers. In fact, with 173,867 registrations worldwide, it is BYD that arrives on the 1st step on the podium for the month of August. But again, be careful, because this figure also includes plug-in hybrid versions.
Considering only electric cars, BYD produced 590,804 electric cars from January to September 2022. For its part, Tesla produced 933,628 electric cars in the same period.
However, there is no doubt that the Chinese brand should still develop very significantly, while it plans to develop in Europe with no less than three 100% electric models.
Tesla then ranks second if we consider BYD plug-in hybrids, having sold 101,778 in August 2022. The American company is so far followed by Volkswagen with 40,387 sales. The rest of the ranking consists almost entirely of Chinese brands, as they are six out of ten. In the annual ranking, BYD, Tesla and SAIC-GM-Wuling occupy the first three steps of the podium, relegating Volkswagen (as a brand) to 4th place. But as a group, Volkswagen is in third place.
11% market share
As sales of electric cars grow in Europe, so too globally. In fact, these increased by 66% in August compared to the same period last year, while this engine currently represents 11% of the market worldwide. A record, whilee electrified models (electric + hybrid) reach 15%with sales up 60% compared to 2021, with 847,580 registrations in August alone.
