West Bank: 2 Palestinians killed after attempted attack

Israeli troops shot and killed two Palestinians near Ramallah at dawn on Monday after they tried to run over soldiers during an arrest raid in the area, the army said.

According to the IDF, as troops were patrolling the Jalazone refugee camp in search of a terrorist suspect, a vehicle drove toward them.

“During the operation, a car ram attack was attempted against the soldiers who responded by firing and thus managed to incapacitate the two suspects,” the army said.

No soldiers were injured during this attack.

The PA Department of Health says it has been notified of the deaths; the men have not yet been identified. According to some Israeli media, a third suspect who was in the car was also injured.

Pictures, published by Palestinian media, showed traces of blood on the road where the incident took place and indicated that the bodies of the suspects were being held by the IDF.

The alleged vehicle attack came amid an increase in violence in the West Bank.

On Sunday, a soldier and a motorist were slightly wounded in two separate shooting attacks on the West Bank.

In recent months, Palestinian gunmen have attacked military posts, troops operating along the West Bank security fence, Israeli settlements and civilians on the roads.

The Israeli army and police have been on high alert since last week as the Jewish New Year holiday season has just begun in Israel, with tensions already high due to an Israeli counter-terror offensive that killed more than 100 on the Palestinian side and resulted in ii more than 2,000 arrests during night operations.

In arrest raids across the West Bank early Monday, 16 wanted Palestinians were arrested, the Israeli military said.

Israeli troops also came under fire several times during night raids in Palestinian towns in the West Bank.

During an operation in May, a police commando was killed when troops carried out an arrest operation in the Jenin area. Last month, a senior IDF officer was killed in a shootout with Palestinians at the northern West Bank security fence.

The army launched arrest operations after a series of Palestinian attacks that killed 19 people between mid-March and early May.
