Its VU meter is just waiting to pop under the influence of a guitar, a bass or even a trumpet. Or all at the same time! The Statown studio opens for bands in October. He is the youngest of the Silver Wolf Music galaxy, a music store based in Lons.

“It’s a studio made for recording live,” testifies Sébastien Loup, one of the two partners in Silver Wolf Music. We had a great demand for this type of service. No study does in the area. You are going to Bordeaux or Toulouse. The studio is located at the back of the shop, next to the rooms that host the Musikfamilieforeningen’s music lessons (see our box). Construction of the complex started in early 2022.

Statown has its own separate outside entrance, a 63 m² living space and a 25 m² control room. But it’s mostly home to little nuggets of analog gear that deliver on the promise of vintage, warm, organic sound. The name of the studio is the contraction of Stax Records and Motown, two pillar brands in soul music.

It is therefore no coincidence that the Midas brand blender dates back to the 1970s. As a true equipment and sound “geek”, Sébastien Loup unearthed it “in a village”, as he put it. And that before she receives interested visits from large Parisian studios. “She would have belonged to the Rolling Stones,” reveals Sébastien Loup. It is 99% safe. The serial number can be traced back to the maintenance books. This table would have been in their mobile studio when they were in France. »

Concerts… with headphones

The studio is open to everyone, both amateurs and professionals. As well as all styles. “There is a great demand for urban music, develops Sébastien Loup. They are sometimes slightly denigrated by some sound engineers. Statown has no official, although a clerk will be in place. We can offer four or five that we know, oriented to different styles. But it is possible to bring your own engineer. It is very open. »

On the price side, Sébastien Loup makes no secret of the fact that “the studio will be well above market prices. Knowing that a day of study in Pau and its surroundings amounts to approximately 200 euros. We are here on a different type of service. »

Analog, semi-analog or digital. The studio promises to adapt to all wishes. He will also benefit from a shadow activity offered by Silver Wolf: the “backline” rental. The term refers to all stage equipment, whether amplifiers or instruments.

“For example, we rent at Zénith,” explains Sébastien Loup. We can also provide a technician. This is what we are doing this summer in Pau. Having all this equipment is a real plus for the studio. With again an assumed penchant for vintage. A Hammond B3 organ will be permanently installed in Statown.

The studio has already been christened. British pop-soul group Mamas Gun took over the premises ahead of their concert at Château de Morlanne on 16 September. “The group slipped to its manager: ‘I think we have found our studio for the next album'”, smiles Sébastien Loup proudly.

By the end of 2022, the general public will also be able to enjoy it. Concerts should be arranged in the studio. “Every member of the public wants a helmet to enjoy the optimal sound”, says Sébastien Loup. We don’t remake each other.
