HP Omen 17-ck1030nf against the competition
HP Omen 17-ck1030nf is currently showing as campaign at HP France and offers an interesting relationship between configuration and price for its category, where it is one of the only ones to offer such a powerful graphics card with such a new processor and Thunderbolt connection.
If this HP Omen 17-ck1030nf doesn’t meet all your criteria, you’ll find other configurations for gaming with a similar budget in our gaming laptop guide. For the same budget, choose the model with the most powerful graphics card, it will have the biggest impact on performance.
Chassis, connector, screen on HP Omen 17-ck1030nf
It has a relatively elegant and understated design for a versatile multimedia laptop, but nevertheless uses gamer codes with its dark design with angular lines.
50% rechargeable in 45 minutes, this creative gaming laptop is well equipped in terms of connectivity with its USB-C Thunderbolt 4, its convenient HDMI and mini DisplayPort video outputs to easily connect it to a TV or monitor, for example its Bluetooth 5.2 and Wi-Fi ax wireless modules (newer and more efficient than Wi-Fi ac) to communicate and connect externally, its Ethernet and audio ports without forgetting its 3 USB 3.0 (USB 2.0 compatible) guarantees transfers up to 10 times faster than USB 2.0 if you connect USB 3.0 peripherals.
It is of course possible to backlit the keys on the chiclet keyboard to better distinguish them in the dark.
However, note the absence of a numeric keypad, although this functionality is standard from 15 inches to enter the numbers more easily.
To appeal to gamers, the screen uses a frequency of 165Hz coupled with a latency time limited to 3ms, which improves fluidity in games. Creators and more generally lovers of High Definition content are not left out, as the screen uses sRGB and IPS specifications that guarantee more accurate than average colorimetry with significant viewing angles, both horizontally and vertically. In addition, the screen adopts a 2.5K definition, which is larger than Full HD, combined with a 16:9 format. Anti-reflective coating also gives the screen better visibility in a bright environment (e.g. outdoors) than a glossy panel, while also being more relaxing for the eyes during prolonged use.
Performance, autonomy for HP Omen 17-ck1030nf
The HP Omen 17-ck1030nf may appeal to those who have a significant budget and want to invest in a versatile 17-inch laptop that is powerful in gaming and creation.
It embeds neither more nor less than the most powerful mobile graphics card at the moment: high-end NVIDIA Ampere GeForce RTX 3080 Ti ray tracing version 16 GB dedicated.
As a result, you can play calmly at a good level of detail in the latest games that use graphics resources. And this even though the 2.5K definition of the screen requires more GPU calculations than Full HD, which induces a lower number of fps.
If gamers will be seduced by the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti, creators also because it speeds up processing under software that utilizes GPU computing power, such as Adobe Premiere / Photoshop or Sony Vegas.
In practice, the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti-ray tracing is encouraged by NVIDIA Optimus technology to perform graphics processing that is considered too heavy for the Intel Iris Xe integrated in the processor.
Iris Xe is actually favored to the maximum by Optimus because it uses little energy, which promotes autonomy. Depending on the needs, Optimus switches automatically and in real time between Intel Iris Xe and GeForce RTX 3080 Ti. With one or the other, you can of course view pictures and videos.
Iris Xe takes its place directly in the Core i7-12700H, an Intel Alder Lake-H hybrid processor here combined with 16 GB of RAM to support the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti in games and deliver overall power capable of filling a maximum number of users.
Creators will especially appreciate this core because it especially provides much faster processing than a classic Quad/Hexa Core and 8 GB DDR4. We feel the difference all the more during demanding work with CPU and RAM resources that utilize the multicore – and therefore the 14 cores of Alder Lake-H – such as in video editing, 3D rendering or photo editing.
The storage is up to par, entrusted to a 1 TB SSD, a large capacity capable of holding more software, games and files including personal production.
An SSD also offers several advantages compared to a hard drive: greater shock resistance, lower power consumption, quieter operation and greater speed.
Specifically, thanks to the SSD, for example, we can access online game maps faster than with a hard drive, and we achieve much faster game/software launches, processing and start/stop.
More generally, the SSD guarantees much better responsiveness and fluidity of use than a simple hard drive.
Finally, on the autonomy side, expect around 5 hours of battery life in light use for this versatile multimedia creator-gamer laptop, which heats up and is noisy under heavy load (eg gaming, processing).
It is clearly not the most easily transportable by nature due to its weight and large format. But the latter is comfortable for mainly sedentary use (e.g. at home).
If necessary, a ventilated support can be used to limit temperatures (remember to check the measurements carefully!).
