Maria Rambeau has the pilot’s nickname “Photon”, which is a reference to her daughter, Monica Rambeau, who we see as a child in the film (played by Akira Akbar) and who we discover as an adult in WandaVision, played by Teyonah Parris. In this series, she develops powers similar to those of the comic book superheroine Photon, also known as Pulsar and… Captain Marvel II.
Cameos and a drama
The Walt Disney Pictures
The two men in the foreground are the two consultants on the film’s aviation scenes: Stephen Del Bagno aka Cajun and Matthew Kimmel aka Spider, two real pilots. Del Bagno died during the filming of Captain Marvel, his camera crashed during a training mission in April 2018. The film was made for him.
Lieutenant Trouble
The Walt Disney Pictures
During the flashback, Carol Danvers calls Monica (in the original version) “Lieutenant Trouble”, which is a reference to the comics where Carol calls Kit Renner, the daughter of her friend Marina. In the French version, this nickname is translated “Lieutenant Rebelle”.
Schwarzy decapitated!
The Walt Disney Pictures
Thinking he heard a noise, Captain Marvel fired one of his powerful beams through the shop window, shattering a commercial for the action film True Lies, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis, released a year before the film’s events in 1994.
Toy Story
The Walt Disney Pictures
Carol then calls for help from “Star Command” with her built-in radio, a reference to the organization Buzz Lightyear works for in Toy Story, an animated film released in 1995, the year the Marvel feature film takes place.
Cinephile
The Walt Disney Pictures
At the Blockbuster store, Carol picks up a box of The Right Stuff in VO, a movie about the first seven astronauts whose fates were closely linked to the fate of the space conquest.
A translator deja vu
The Walt Disney Pictures
Carol Danvers has a universal translation implant that allows her to be understood by all the beings she may encounter in the galaxy. This tool is also possessed by Peter Quill aka Star-Lord of the Guardians of the Galaxy. For the record, the man the superheroine is talking to is played by Barry Curtis, the head of security on every Marvel movie since Iron Man 2.
Literary cameo
The Walt Disney Pictures
The actress judging Captain Marvel’s performance during the subway scene is none other than Kelly Sue DeConnick, author of several comics, including several dedicated to the superheroine. She worked as a consultant on the feature film.
A big mistake
The Walt Disney Pictures
On this computer screen, Carol Danvers searched for the word “Pegasus” and among the results it says that pegasus “appeared in the Disney movie Hercules”. A fun nod if it wasn’t a chronological error as Hercules was released in 1997, two years BEFORE the plot of Captain Marvel.
Stan Lee’s (moving) cameo
The Walt Disney Pictures
This is Stan Lee’s first cameo to air after his death in 2018. He will reappear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Avengers: Endgame. He reads the script for Mallrats (Les Glandeurs en VF), a film by Kevin Smith in which Stan Lee made a cameo in 1995. Very meta!
A face that has already been seen
The Walt Disney Pictures
The most observant fans will have recognized that actor Nelson Franklin previously appeared in Season 3 of the Marvel series Agents of SHIELD, playing Steve Wilson, a member of the Advanced Threat Containment Unit when the body is brought to a deal with the Inhumans.
Skrull fiction
The Walt Disney Pictures
When Talos infiltrates the Rambeaus’ farm, he sips a straw drink from a goblet reminiscent of Jules Winnfield’s in Pulp Fiction in the famous “Big Kahuna Burger” scene. And of course, Samuel L. Jackson is in both movies!
The Walt Disney Pictures
When Carol tests out costume colors, the first attempt results in a mix of red and gold, similar to DC Comics hero Shazam’s costume, originally named…Captain Marvel!
Cat
The Walt Disney Pictures
This cat, which is not one, hides a flerken, an alien species that looks like the Earth cat. Their mouths are full of tentacles with little dimensional pouches, which explains how Nick Fury’s cat was able to pick up and swallow the Tesseract.
