Dynamic Island is the key new design feature on the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max. It integrates the phone’s notch into a notification and control center. Even before the new iPhones were officially available for purchase, some resourceful Android developers copied parts of the feature. How to use them.

Dynamic island-style notifications

Currently, there are also two ways to bring Dynamic Island to Android phones. Granted, they’re not as compelling as the original, but they’re close to Apple’s design. And don’t forget: it took just over a week from Apple’s presentation to the first working copy. Early drafts are likely to be largely obsolete in the near future.

EdgeMask is an Android app that lets you change the style of your notifications. With a little tweaking, you’ll get notifications that look a lot like Dynamic Island. However, it is not the same feature as it does not include music player or map. It just changes the style of your pop-up messages.

If you want to bring an iPhone 14 Pro touch to your Android smartphone, just follow these steps:

  • Download EdgeMask from the Play Store
  • Open the app

Now the app needs some permissions to work properly. To activate it, click on the first menu item and the application will take you to the appropriate place in your smartphone settings.

  • Click on the first menu item
  • Allow EdgeMask to show notifications on other apps
  • Back to app
  • Now click on the first menu item again
  • Here you must allow notifications for EdgeMask

If you choose this option, you will receive a warning that EdgeMask can read and control your notifications. If you do not want this, cancel the configuration at this point. If that’s okay with you, move on to the next point:

  • Select the first menu item a third time
  • Now enable lock screen shortcut
  • To do this, select “Downloaded Apps”.
  • Then go to “EdgeMask”
  • Now select “Use EdgeMask”.

Again, you will get a warning that EdgeMask can read your control screen if you enable this permission. If you are ok with that, you can continue. If not, simply cancel the configuration.

Now the app has all the necessary permissions and you still need to make the notifications look like Dynamic Island. To do this, do the following:

  • Go to the “Message” menu item.
  • Disable “Ripple Style 2”
  • Enable “Samsung Style Message”

Now tap on the small slider icon next to “Samsung Style Message”. Here you can fine-tune notifications. To do this, first set the background color to black. Then “Message Color” will be displayed in white. Use the slider below to set “Duration” to 8.

Finally, activate the “Margin” menu item, after which another slider called “Vertical” will appear. With this you decide where on the screen the notifications are displayed. Every smartphone is different here. Play around with the slider and see where it works best for you.

Thats it. At least now you have island-style dynamic notifications. Whether an app will sooner or later bring all the functionality of iPhone functionality to Android remains to be seen.

Dynamic Island on Android from China

However, you can’t use the most convincing Dynamic Island copy so far, as it is only available for Xiaomi phones and currently only in China.

Twitter user Vaibhav Jain shows the Dynamic Island version in action:

That sounds good on its own, provided it supports other features like notifications, maps, or timers besides the music player. The design is available via Xiaomi’s ‘Themes’ app and is called ‘Grumpy UI’, but as I said: currently only in China. I couldn’t find them on my Xiaomi device while writing this text.

We will only find out what exactly “gritty UI” can do when and if it is also available in this country. If you don’t want to wait that long, there is another option: Dynamic Island with EdgeMask.

What is Dynamic Island?

On the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, Apple has placed the Face ID camera and sensors at the top center of the screen. There she sits in a black oval on the screen. Dynamic Island embeds notifications in this oval, making it look like notifications and widgets are coming from the camera system.

However, the easiest way to explain it is to see it. For that, you can watch Apple’s video about the function:
