iPhone 14? Buy iPhone 12 instead!

Those who don’t need an iPhone with Pro features look to the standard iPhone. But since the brand new standard iPhone 14 is expensive in France, the older models seem particularly attractive to many users. We have already made a comparison between the iPhone 14 and the iPhone 13. In this article we take an overview of the iPhone 2020: the iPhone 12, special in many ways because it has received a new design after a few years and it is equipped with features, that will remain important in the future. Why, compared to iPhone 14, iPhone 12 is probably more interesting for you.

iPhone 14 vs 12: The commonalities

At first glance, the iPhone 14 and iPhone 12 look like two drops of water. In fact, they also have a lot in common, such as:

  • a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display
  • a notch with Face ID
  • a dual camera system with a main sensor and an ultra-wide angle
  • 2x optical zoom
  • 5G
  • Mag safe
  • An IP index (according to the IEC 60529 standard)
  • A portrait and night mode
  • 4K video recording

iPhone 14 vs 12: The differences

Of course, the two models also differ in certain respects. The iPhone 14 thus has a 20% smaller notch than the iPhone 12. Apple introduced the small notch at the top of the screen for the iPhone 13.

In retrospect, the smaller notch had more marketing than practical utility, but those bothered by the iPhone 12 notch will likely have trouble with a smaller one as well. The same goes for the replacement notch called “Dynamic Island” in the iPhone 14 Pro, which in our opinion is revolutionary.

iPhone 14 is also equipped with car accident detection, the A15 Bionic chip (iPhone 12 has the A14 Bionic chip and therefore one less GPU core) and different memory capacities and colors. The sensor is arranged vertically on the iPhone 12, while on the iPhone 14 it occupies the diagonal of 13. The new photonic engine in the iPhone 14 allows you to take better photos thanks to the A15 chip and for values a slightly improved aperture, but the photos from the iPhone 12 (tested) are just as impressive.

With features such as Deep Fusion, Smart HDR 3, portrait mode “with advanced bokeh”, night mode and video recording in 4K (24, 25, 30 or 60 fps) as well as a selfie sensor of 12 Mp, you will still be well equipped with the iPhone 12 in 2022.

The battery performance is better on the iPhone 14 than on the 12 and 13 versions. Apple itself does not state the battery performance in mAh, but according to the playback time of videos or audio content. Over the past two years, Apple has been able to consistently improve performance:

iPhone 12 iPhone 13 iPhone 14
Video playback Until Until Up to
Video playback (streaming) Until 11 a.m Until Until
Audio playback Up to 65 hours Up to 75 hours Up to 80 hours
Fast charging (with 20W AC adapter) Up to 50% in 30 minutes Up to 50% in 30 minutes Up to 50% in 30 minutes

Colors and storage capacity

The iPhone 14 is available in five different colors, but the iPhone 12 in six. However, the colors vary slightly from generation to generation:

  • iPhone 14 blue, purple, midnight, polar star, (PRODUCT)RED
  • iPhone 12 blue, purple, white, black, (PRODUCT) RED, Green

If less memory is enough for you, you’ll be better off with the iPhone 12, as it already starts at 64GB. Therefore, the current prices for such a device are also favorable.

The maximum storage capacity on the iPhone 12 is only 256 GB, while on the iPhone 14 it ranges from 128 GB to 512 GB.

If you buy the iPhone 12 directly from Apple, prices start at €809. If you want more memory, you’ll have to pay €859 (128GB) or €979 (256GB). However, you can get the iPhone 12 at a significantly lower price if you buy it from a retailer.

Who is the iPhone 14 suitable for and who is the iPhone 12 suitable for?

You are in the best position to answer this question. If you appreciate the larger storage capacities, the (slightly different) colors and of course the new features of the iPhone 14, it is obvious that you will be better served with the current model.

Still, we’re of the opinion that it’s better to skip the iPhone 14, save up and get an older model, even if you have to give up a smaller notch, bigger battery or new features like accident detection.

iPhone 12 comes with a wealth of features that will be more than enough for years to come, a modern design with a great photo and video system, 5G connectivity, Magsafe and all this at a now reasonable price.
