An experiment in a first quarter
It was one of the measures announced during the 2020 municipal campaign in Nantes, it is becoming a reality. On September 18, the Foch-Cathédrale district will be emptied of its cars for the first edition of Car-Free Sunday. A very symbolic event, and an extra step in favor of a peaceful city. “ This is the first, but the ambition is to install this event in time. If the first edition takes place in 2022, others will follow!explains Simon Citeau, soft transport assistant. Each year the car-free day will take place in different locations. »
Another look at the city
” This experiment is an opportunity for everyone to reclaim public space “, emphasizes Patrice Boutin, assistant for public space. Between traffic and parking, the car is greedy for space: a parking space takes up 12.5 m² of public space; the space used today to store all cars in the metropolitan area represents 370 hectares, that is, the area of the island of Nantes! The first lockdown linked to the Covid-19 epidemic, in the spring of 2020, made it possible to clearly perceive the place devoted to the car: Nantes was almost emptied of its cars for several weeks; spaces used for parking, thoroughfares and spaces normally given over to car traffic have become deserted. In 2022, this time, residents will be free to take full advantage of these rediscovered spaces: rue de Strasbourg, Geoffrey-Drouet, Clemenceau, Place Demoustier, Place de l’Oratoire, Foch…
An area to invest
Car-free Sunday takes place in a large part of the city center, from rue de Strasbourg to the west to the Jardin des Plantes to the east, between Quai Barbusse to the north and the water mirror to the south. Soccer tournaments, shuffleboard games, roller skating or scooter rides, picnics with neighbors, jumps and children’s games… Residents are encouraged to use the available space as they wish from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. ” A car-free day to experience the city differently, with joy, freedom, ingenuity, sociability, where Nantes residents take to the streets to do what they want “Summarizes Johanna Rolland, Mayor of Nantes and President of Nantes Métropole.
Ten centers of animation
A dense program of events has been developed by the city of Nantes, the metropolis and its partners to mark this special day. Ten entertainment centers will be established, with the Place de l’Oratoire as the central reception area. An overview ? Quai Barbusse plays the zen card between reading trips, massages and aromatherapy. Rue Salengro, board games are out with Spillehuset and the playful Sauce. Place Saint-Pierre, at 14:00 the company Bikes & Rabbits offers an electric concert on an acrobatic bicycle. Rue Joffre, always festive, changing concerts, street jams, introduction to swing dancing and DJ sets… Note that car-free Sunday coincides with Piéto’Nantes, the pedestrian street festival of Nantes and the 39th.e European Heritage Days.
