Lenovo today introduced the next-generation ThinkPad X1 Fold, the successor to the first foldable display laptop launched in 2020. It was designed to deliver all the performance you’d expect from a next-generation laptop, while offering a larger screen surface and remaining ultra-portable. The world’s lightest 16-inch business computer, it combines versatility, power and mobility in a slimmer, thinner design: the 16-inch OLED screen is 22% larger than the previous generation, with narrower bezels and a 25% thinner aluminum chassis, if back is made of 100% recycled plastic.
Intel vPro Evo certified and equipped with 12th generation Intel Core i7 processors and Intel Iris X e graphics, the next generation ThinkPad X1 Fold delivers superior performance in an innovative form factor. It can have SSD storage up to 1TB2 and up to 32GB LPDDR5 memory.
The new ThinkPad X1 Fold offers an optional full-size backlit ThinkPad keyboard with TrackPoint and large touchpad, which can be placed directly on the PC or not depending on the usage. It can be magnetically attached to the bottom half of the screen for classic laptop mode with a 12-inch screen.
The next generation ThinkPad X1 Fold has an ultra-bright 16.3-inch 4:3 format OLED screen, up to 600 nits in HDR, Dolby Vision and 100% DCI-P3 coverage. It can also be used with an optional magnetically attached stylus using the Wacom protocol. The edges of the screen are no more than 10 mm, and the computer itself is only 8.6 mm thick when unfolded. The foldable display offers a 16-inch display area when unfolded without taking up more space than a computer under 13 inches when folded.
The classic clamshell mode, with a 12-inch main screen and a touchscreen keyboard in the lower part of the screen, on which the ThinkPad Bluetooth TrackPoint keyboard can also be attached. It is ideal for small spaces such as planes, trains and cars.
Landscape mode: When space is at a premium, the ThinkPad X1 Fold can be transformed into a 16-inch all-in-one computer thanks to its stand and keyboard that can be used while detached or attached to the stand.
Portrait mode is a new feature that won over users during the first tests. By rotating the support in portrait mode, you get a 16-inch screen, which is very practical for reading long documents, consulting web pages, etc.
Book mode: the name speaks for itself. The ThinkPad X1 Fold then offers an unprecedented reading experience on a laptop.
Tablet mode: it can simply be used as a tablet in portrait or landscape format and controlled with your finger or with the magnetic stylus.
The hinge has been redesigned so that it does not leave a gap between the two parts of the screen when folded. Over two hundred parts move synchronously within the hinge to ensure reliability and durability. Lenovo engineers have also developed a patent-pending set of bendable graphite plates to dissipate heat without the need for a fan.
The optional keyboard includes the newly introduced TrackPoint Communications Quick Menu application. It provides quick access to camera and microphone functions. On the connectivity side, three USB Type C ports, including two Intel Thunderbolt 4 ports, are available, so at least two are always easily accessible regardless of the mode of use. The same principle applies to speakers and microphones. Three Dolby Atmos speakers are built in, and two of them are always on to ensure stereo sound. They are complemented by dual microphones, one of which is active depending on the mode used. With Dolby Voice, microphone and speaker performance is optimized by leveraging spatial audio technology for a quality conference experience.
To unlock the full potential of the ThinkPad X1 Fold’s unique form factor, Lenovo is the first to integrate an improved version of the Intel® Visual Sensing Controller (VSC), an AI-powered chip that ensures a smooth experience no matter what. or how the device3 is used. Intel’s VSC automatically controls the camera using the 75-degree horizontal field of view and takes advantage of Windows 11’s automatic window alignment. Smart sensing makes the new ThinkPad X1 Fold incredibly precise and responsive. The “wake-on-approach” function automatically recognizes the user to reactivate the system immediately. Combined with Windows Hello, it provides simple hands-free identification. To increase security, the “bystander detection” feature alerts the user of prying eyes to maintain privacy. Finally, “walk-away-lock” detects when the user leaves and locks the system to prevent further access.
The next generation ThinkPad X1 Fold with Windows 11 is expected to be available from November 2022 for €2,999
