iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus: A15 chip renewed, designed by iPhone 13 too

On the occasion of its usual back-to-school conference, Apple presents the iPhone 14. The most affordable smartphone in the range is accompanied by a model labeled Plus, with which it shares its characteristics, starting with the A15 Bionic chip.

No iPhone Mini this year. This terminal, which had attracted anyway Digital in version 13, will have no successor. The non-Pro versions of the iPhone 14 are nevertheless two in number this year, as the flagship smartphone of the series is accompanied by an iPhone 14 Plus, the first of its series. The trend is therefore no longer for small formats, but for large terminals, no offense to small hands.

The A16 Bionic chip reserved for the iPhone Pro

The iPhone 14 and 14 Plus have identical specifications, with the obvious exception of their respective screen sizes. And although Apple never officially communicates about this particular feature, the capacity of the battery. On the menu, therefore, iPhones that surprise with an important feature: they are not animated by chipset Apple A16 Bionic, new apple chip and logically the most powerful in its catalog, but of the one that had been formalized together with the iPhone 13: A15 Bionic. This SoC offered top performance and certainly has nothing outdated, but its use is surprising given the selling price of the two smartphones. However, Apple promises a redesigned internal design to reduce the thermal envelope and improve the smartphone’s autonomy.

The two models in the 14 series are also provided with a solid technical sheet. There is a 6.1-inch Oled panel for the iPhone 14 and 6.7 inches for the iPhone 14 Plus, but both still do not leave the old notch that Apple is the only one to have on its devices. To be forgiven, the brand promises a maximum brightness of 1200 cd / m².

On the photo side, nothing changes, Apple still offers a duo of 12-megapixel sensors, one with a wide angle and the other with an ultra-wide angle. Apple claims to have opted for a larger main sensor, which translates to 1.9μm pixels versus 1.7μm on the iPhone 13, and the promise of brighter images. The video benefits from a new Action Mode, i.e. improved electronic stabilization.

Connection first

The new iPhones, sparse in terms of technical innovations, rely on features related to connectivity. They are actually able to accommodate multiple eSIM profiles, which are starting to develop worldwide, but not only. Satellite links, which Huawei was the first to announce yesterday with its Mate 50, are therefore supported by the new generation of iPhone 14.

The duo relies on this technology to send emergency messages. Bandwidth is so minimal, Apple states that they have developed a compression algorithm to limit the time it takes to send messages, but also default responses to facilitate exchanges with emergency services. This feature, free for two years with the purchase of an iPhone 14 or iPhone 14 Plus, is currently reserved for the US and Canada, where it will launch in November. Note that the car crash detection feature, linked to the devices’ accelerometers and gyroscopes, works on the iPhone 14 just like the Apple Watch Series 8.

As you will have understood, the 48 Mpx photo sensor, the notch and its Dynamic Island, the brightness of 2000 nits are all specificities reserved for the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max. The 14 and 14 Plus models are logically a bit cheaper, with a starting price set at €1019 for the first and €1169 for the second.

Both devices will be available for pre-order from September 9, while the iPhone 14 will be available from September 16. The iPhone 14 Plus goes on sale from October 7.
