Disney+’s new Andor series is the next live-action addition to the ever-expanding Star Wars franchise, featuring the long-awaited return of the eponymous character Diego Luna. This upcoming prequel series will explore Andor’s life before the events of Rogue One, leading up to the spinoff film at the end of the series’ two seasons.
Cassian Andor is perhaps best known to fans for his heroic sacrifice at the end of Rogue One alongside his friends and compatriots from the planet Scarif. As fans get more excited about his upcoming spin-off series, Cassian has become one of many Star Wars characters to be honored as a hero who died for a noble cause.
Diego Luna’s Rogue One character is heralded as one of the Rebel Alliance’s best agents, but also one of the most morally gray. Cassian Andor fights for a cause he believes is worthwhile and will do anything to stop the Empire. It is only after his brief association with the other members of the Rogue One team that he embraces his more heroic side and eventually dies on Scarif as the Death Star tests its destructive powers on the planet’s terrain.
Cassian may not have been cast as a particularly admirable character, but he quickly becomes someone worth emulating by the end of the film. His heroic exploits were crucial to the success of the rebellion in the next film, A New Hope, although he would not live to see such a victory. When Cassian returns to Andor, however, he will be the most morally gray character portrayed in Rogue One’s first act.
Felicity Jones stars as Jyn Erso, the protagonist of the Star Wars spin-off film Rogue One, who leads a rebel operation to steal the secret plans for the Death Star, designed by her father. She, along with the rest of her surviving teammates, ultimately meet their demise when the Death Star tests its laser on the planet Scarif in the Rogue One finale.
Although she would have been reluctant to admit it, Jyn was a true heroine of the Rebellion at the time of her death. Her selfless actions were instrumental in saving countless lives from the destructive power of the Death Star, even though she could not see the fruits of her sacrifice. Because of her heroism, Jyn Erso remains a major character that many fans hope to see appear in Andor.
Obi Wan Kenobi
Obi-Wan Kenobi is perhaps best known to many fans as one of the most memorable Star Wars characters of all time. However, Obi-Wan’s true heroism as a Jedi Knight is often lost in the pervasive culture of internet memes. The aging Jedi even proved willing to sacrifice his own life aboard the Death Star in A New Hope, ultimately giving a temporary victory to his former Padawan, Darth Vader.
Obi-Wan’s sacrifice was far more significant than it first appeared, as the Jedi Master allowed himself to be killed in front of Luke Skywalker’s eyes. Kenobi’s death motivated Luke to join the Rebellion and ultimately destroy the Death Star and become one of the greatest heroes the galaxy has ever seen. Obi-Wan knew his death would serve a higher purpose and gladly accepted his fate.
Liam Neeson’s Qui-Gon Jinn is a prominent character in the otherwise troubled prequel film The Phantom Menace. The wise-cracking Jedi master didn’t last long in the franchise, dying in the middle of a battle with Sith apprentice Darth Maul on the planet Naboo.
Qui-Gon was a testament to what the Jedi should still be at a time when many of the Order had gone astray. In his final moments, Qui-Gon ordered his apprentice Obi-Wan to train Anakin Skywalker, knowing that he was the Chosen One the Prophecy spoke of. Even in death, Qui-Gon kept the big picture in mind, believing in Anakin’s ability to save the galaxy.
Biggs Darklighter is a character from the original Star Wars trilogy who doesn’t get the credit he deserves. As one of the most prominent members of A New Hope’s Red Squadron at the Battle of Yavin, Biggs ends up losing his life during the battle when he is shot out of the sky by Darth Vader’s TIE fighter. .
Despite a relative lack of screen time, Biggs is a central character in early Star Wars history. He, along with the other members of Rogue Squadron, serves as a testament to the common man standing against an oppressive power. He and his compatriots, many of whom died at the Battle of Yavin, were ready and willing to give their lives if it meant winning a better future for other innocent life forms in the galaxy.
Mads Mikkelsen plays Galen Erso, Jyn Erso’s father and the engineer behind the creation of the Death Star, in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Forced to design the Death Star against his will, Galen is ultimately killed along with several other Imperial officers when a Rebel squadron fires on their landing pad.
Galen is one of the silent heroes of the Star Wars franchise, who has been working behind the scenes to further the battle between good and evil. He used his position to plant a large rift in the Death Star that Luke Skywalker would later exploit to destroy the space station. Although the galaxy may never know Galen Erso’s name, he is still one of its greatest heroes.
Carrie Fisher’s Leia Organa is one of the most iconic characters in film history. Beginning as a rebel leader and eventually rising to the rank of general in the resistance, Leia has dedicated her life to dismantling all evil in the galaxy. She eventually dies after using all her energy to communicate with her son, Ben, on the other side of the galaxy.
Leia’s death in The Rise of Skywalker was compounded by Fisher’s actual death several years before the film was released. The final film in the Skywalker saga gave the beloved princess and general a rightful exit as she gave her life to the one person she loved more than anyone else, leading to her ultimate redemption.
CT-5555, also known as “Fives”, was an ARC-Trooper during the Clone Wars, serving as a member of the 501st Legion. After discovering that each clone trooper had been implanted with an inhibitor chip that would eventually order them to kill their Jedi generals, Fives is branded a traitor and hunted down by his brothers, only to be shot before he can pass on his findings.
Fives’ final arc really proves his position as one of the best Star Wars clones. His devotion to the Jedi and the Republic was not appreciated by his superiors, resulting in his tragic death. If someone had just listened to ARC-Trooper, the very course of the franchise’s history could have been changed forever.
Adam Driver’s Ben Solo, also known as Kylo Ren, is a notable character in the Star Wars sequel trilogy whose redemption from the dark side is a defining factor in the final three films of the Skywalker saga. After returning to the Light Side, Ben helps Rey fight the resurrected Sheev Palpatine, eventually transferring her life force to him after she is mortally wounded, resulting in her own death afterwards.
Ben’s death solidified his heroic turn and once and for all alienated the once vicious warrior from his villainous roots. In the end, he turned out to be much more like his grandfather than he expected, sacrificing his life to atone for his own mistakes, saving a loved one in the process.
Luke Skywalker is the greatest hero in the Star Wars franchise and one of the most talented Jedi Masters of all time. The famous Jedi finally meets his demise at the end of The Last Jedi, dying after working to save the Resistance from total destruction at the hands of the First Order.
Luke’s death completed the character’s arc throughout the film by rediscovering the heroic qualities he had kept buried for decades. Despite years of self-torment, the aging Jedi has once again proven his heroism. In his final moments, Luke did what he swore he would never do again: save the galaxy.
