Arab-Israeli journalist Nadal Ijbaria, who reported on violent crime in the Arab community, was shot dead in his car in Umm al-Fahm on Sunday evening.
Israel’s police said they received a report on Sunday evening about a 44-year-old man found shot dead in his car in the northern Israeli city. He was rushed to Emek Hospital in Afula in critical condition where he was pronounced dead, first responders said.
Police said they are investigating the case, collecting evidence from the scene and looking for suspects.

Ijbaria was the editor of the news site Bldtna, which reports on developments in Umm al-Fahm. On its Facebook page, the news site lamented Ijbaria’s death on Sunday evening.
“The voice of truth will not die,” the news site wrote, adding that Ijbaria was returning from a mosque when he was killed.
Last year, more than 50 bullets were fired at the house Ijbaria shared with his wife and daughter. No injuries were reported in the attack, which was blamed on Ijbaria’s reporting on violence in the Arab community.
MP Meretz Ali Salalha said Ijbaria’s death showed that “Arab citizens [d’Israël] live here without security! “.
He described the slain journalist as “another innocent victim of violence in Arab society” and called on the Israeli authorities to do more to prevent the wave of killings.
The Federation of Journalists in Israel said it was “horrified” by Ijbaria’s murder and sent its condolences to his family. “The Israeli police must act immediately to find the killers and bring them to justice,” the union said.
The Hadash political faction accused Israeli police of failing to protect Ijbaria after it became clear he was a target of violence.
“The police have known for a year that criminal organizations have seen Nadal Ijbaria’s home,” Hadash said in a statement. “Nadal was murdered today because of police incompetence. The murder of a journalist is an attempt to silence the voice of the Arab protest against violence and crime. »
According to the Abraham Initiatives, a group that fights violence in the Arab community, at least 69 Israeli Arabs have been killed since the start of the year in violent crimes.
