Gym Tonic: the great interview with Jean-Pierre Rivère

The president of OGC Nice Jean-Pierre Rivère was a guest on the “Gym Tonic” program last Friday. Find his main answers to questions from journalists from the Nice-Matin group.

“We can judge him at the end of the season, that’s what I always say. I remember last year’s transfer window, but also the year before when we were “number 1” in L’Equipe and then we had a terrible flop.

In the last three years we have made some mistakes. There we were in the middle of the transfer window with developments and a change that was not programmed. So a bit in difficulties, which means that we had to settle down very quickly, put people in place and a working method. It took time because when things move in the middle of the transfer window, it’s never easy. Everyone wants to end the transfer window as soon as possible. Then we made choices, on some players who will be with us for a long time, and for others where we said to ourselves, let’s not rush, not to choose players that we will carry for 3-4 years . It’s a balance that we tried to find with the desire to be extremely structured for the future. It is an axis of progress. »

“It was not planned. We had heard rumors that Rennes were approaching for a few weeks. They ended up being confirmed. And at the same time there was this opportunity to recover Laborde.

Amine is a boy that I really like. He will be a very big player, but at the moment he was in a bit of trouble with us. At some point, a player’s career may undergo an evolution or a change that allows him to find, perhaps, his game, his spirit. I hope everyone will be happy with this deal. A mess ? He is a boy who did well at first, who gradually withered away. You can find all the reasons in the world. We saw him in trouble, struggling and it’s never good to see a player like that. »

“Iain knows the English market very well, he has worked there for years. He did a remarkable job under the conditions in which he did it. He adapted very well. We went to pick him up at the last minute, we had to settle down for him to understand what the coach wanted. It really wasn’t an easy transfer window. It was a real pleasure to work with him. »

“The prospects for INEOS with OGC Nice and in general with the city of Nice represent an incredible opportunity for us. To have owners of this quality… I think people will realize it even more in 2-3 years. »

“In every sport they are at the top, in Formula 1 they have been world champions 8 times, in cycling they have won the Tour de France 7 times more than any other competition. In sailing it is the pinnacle of competition. Rugby, the partnership with the All Blacks, is the highlight of the competition.

Today, the goal is for OGC Nice to fully integrate this INEOS Sports galaxy. Its excellence, performance and results. OGC Nice will have continuous growth. »

“The ambitions are simple. First, it tries to perform in all competitions, including Europe. We got off to a bad start with five points after five days. We must restore the balance. The goal is to get as high as possible. When I arrived, I said: We will try to install OGC Nice in the first part of the championship and once in a while go and play in Europe. The luck is that we almost settled in this first part of the championship and we played Europe more often than expected, not always with great success in the opening rounds and beyond, but we did it. There is the goal for the coming years for OGC Nice to play Europe very very regularly. »

“Late transfer windows are very complicated, even for the players. There are some who were going to leave who didn’t go. It’s not simple. We missed the start of the season, it’s up to us to rectify the situation If we have to do the same type of match as in Lille, we will do it again to raise the crossbar and start again.

When you have bad results, the negative spiral is worrying. Therefore, Lille was an important match to stop it. Players are the legs, but also the head. In sports, when your head hangs a little, you try fewer things, you’re less aggressive. We know where we need to make progress, so we will work on it in the future. »

“We opened for a week to our subscribers (+ 14,000, editor’s note). We sold 1,500 tickets. On Wednesday, the free sale was open for a few hours from midnight, and at 5 o’clock there were already 2,500 seats taken by the Germans! We cannot legally refuse sales. There is demand for 8-10,000 seats on the Cologne side. We had to sectorize that for security reasons. I want people in Nice to say to themselves, we are in the European Cup , it is a Thursday night but we are at home. The enthusiasm that is in Germany for this game, I want us to find in Nice. We welcome them with joy, but we have to show them that we are present.”
