Samsung Announces Plans to Create the Ultimate Sustainable Home Experience Samsung Global Newsroom

Efficient appliances and smart services maximize energy savings and provide sustainable solutions in the home.

Samsung Electronics today unveiled at IFA 2022 its vision to create the ultimate sustainable home through advanced energy-saving technologies and strategic partnerships, as the company aims to become the best in energy-efficient home appliances.

“As customer needs shift toward more sustainable options, we are excited to meet those needs by offering the latest energy-saving smart devices,” said JaeSeung Lee, President and Head of Digital Devices Business at Samsung Electronics. “By leveraging efficient appliances with the synergistic features of SmartThings, we plan to deliver a truly sustainable home experience like never before.”

No. 1 in energy savings thanks to smart technologies

With the introduction of SmartThings Home earlier this year, Samsung laid the foundation for creating a truly sustainable home. By combining connected devices with services like SmartThings Energy1 with AI Energy Mode, users can maximize energy savings through optimizations.

For Samsung washing machines ranked #1 in energy efficiency,2 SmartThings Energy with AI Energy Mode optimizes washing cycles3 with technologies such as AI Ecobubble which reduces energy by up to 70%4 washing clothes in cold water, while providing powerful cleaning.

Samsung refrigerators, also ranked #1 in energy efficiency in their class,5 benefit from SmartThings Energy with AI Energy Mode by intelligently adjusting temperatures based on door opening patterns and compressor speed,6 allows users to save up to 10% on energy consumption. This saving is expected to increase to 30% by the end of the year — 15% reduction thanks to the compressor and the Defrost AI algorithm7 with a further 15% reduction due to maintaining a higher average internal temperature8 in the fridge.

Other notable energy savings include 40%9 for Eco Heating System, 20% for dryers and 20%10 by the end of this year for the residential air conditioner (RAC).11

In the European market, starting this month, for the new Bespoke AI™ washing machines, Bespoke low-freezer and eco-friendly heating system (EHS), Samsung strives to go beyond what is required by the current “A” standard,12 by achieving an additional 10% energy saving for the models in question.

Together, these energy savings are the precursor to the future of sustainability that Samsung envisions for its devices. As such, Samsung has set itself the goal of ensuring that 100% by 202313 large appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines and RACs and EHS will be Wi-Fi enabled and can be integrated with SmartThings.

In addition to household appliances, Samsung and Qcells have developed Net Zero Home,14 a truly self-sufficient home capable of generating and storing sustainable energy from solar panels to power the latest efficient Samsung appliances, all intelligently controlled by SmartThings.

Interchangeable custom designs to suit the home

The durability of Samsung devices is also reflected in the customized designs of Bespoke products. Modularity and replaceable panels built into appliances, such as custom refrigerators, reduce waste by extending the life of the appliance. Users can purchase additional designs and easily change the panels of their Bespoke fridges as their lifespan progresses, effectively meaning appliances can be updated rather than discarded as needs change.

Commit to sustainability through durability and a 20-year warranty

Samsung’s vision for sustainability also includes support for the company’s advanced digital inverter technologies (DIT). The result of more than 25 years of research and development, DIT technology affects all aspects of energy efficiency, performance and durability of major appliances.

By offering a 20-year warranty15 — Samsung’s most comprehensive warranty to date — for digital inverter motors and digital inverter compressors, the company not only confirms its confidence in the reliability of its products, but is also committed to reducing waste and promoting sustainability.16 For users, the warranty means extra peace of mind knowing they can use their devices for many years to come.

Collaboration to create cleaner technologies

By becoming a leader in energy-efficient consumer technology, Samsung is also partnering with companies with green goals. With Ocean Wise and Patagonia, Samsung has developed washing machine technologies to reduce microplastic pollution produced by laundry. The new washing machines, due to be released in September, will be able to reduce microplastic pollution in laundry by an impressive 54%.17 New washing machines are not the only ones to benefit from it, as all connected washing machines will also have access to it by the end of the year thanks to updates.

As sustainability becomes a major factor in our lives, Samsung is excited to lead the way by creating home appliances that can help save energy and resources in the home. Join IFA 2022 or visit Samsung.com to learn more.
