August’s best-selling electric car is a failed model

In August, French manufacturers are solid in terms of electric car sales. But Tesla is not far behind!

Renault Megane E-Tech

As we saw this morning, Tesla in Europe has outrageously dominated the electric car market since the beginning of the year, although the American manufacturer had a more difficult summer than other brands. Now place sales figures for the French market, compiled by AAA Data, dominated by Renault, Fiat and Dacia, slightly different from what we had known last month.

Sales of electric cars in August

In first place we find the Renault Megane E-Tech, very closely followed by the Fiat 500 and Dacia Spring, which occupies third place. Peugeot remains in the running with its e-208, followed by the Renault Twingo E-Tech in 5th place. It is closely followed by the Tesla Model Y, which outperforms the Peugeot e-2008. In the last three places we find the Hyundai Kona Electric, Renault Zoé and Kia Niro EV.

Focus on the Megane E-Tech

Remember that the Renault Megane E-Tech is assembled in France and that its engine is now also produced in France without the use of rare earths. The battery is from LG and made in Poland. The French manufacturer plans to bring the production of battery cells home to Douai from 2024. Let us take this opportunity to remind that the Mégane E-Tech is also subject to a remote recall, due toan error during recharging which may lead to breakage of the air conditioner.

Where are the Tesla Model 3s?

If you’re looking for the Tesla Model 3, check out the 14th place in the ranking with 255 units. As a reminder, Teslas deliver erratically, based on boat arrivals from China and the United States. But the new Berlin factory, which currently only produces the Model Y Performance, should be able to solve that problem in the coming months.

That is why in July no Model Y was delivered in all of Europe for only 888 Model 3. The month of September should be more favorable for deliveries from the American manufacturer.

Car Sales (July 2022)
Renault Megane E-Tech 1,521
Fiat 500e 1,325
Dacia Spring 988
Peugeot e-208 889
Renault Twingo ZE 714
Tesla Model Y 702
Peugeot e-2008 602
Hyundai Kona Electric 465
Renault Zoe 438
Kia Niro EV 398

Accumulated numbers since January

Now let’s look at the cumulative figures, between January and July 2022. The ranking is not completely different, but it is the Peugeot e-208 that leads the dance on the podium, followed by the Fiat 500 and the Dacia Spring. Tesla is in better shape here, with the Model 3 in 6th place and the Model Y in 8th place.

Compared to 2021, Tesla delivered 19% fewer cars in the same period. However, the arrival of the Tesla Model Y Propulsion in France, cheaper than the Model 3 Propulsion, should turn the tide in the coming months.

Car Sales (cumulative 2022 to 31 August)
Peugeot e-208 11,979
Fiat 500e 11,185
Dacia Spring 10,852
Renault Zoe 9,515
Renault Twingo E-Tech 9,315
Tesla Model 3 8,063
Renault Megane E-Tech 6,257
Tesla Model Y 4,713
Peugeot e-2008 4,614
Hyundai Kona Electric 4,232

Electric is on the way

According to AAA Data figures, electric cars are growing in France with a market share of 13% in August, just behind diesel with 16% and petrol with 38%. Plug-in hybrids see their share drop to just 7% of the market. Remember that these will no longer benefit from their tax benefits from 2025 in Europe.

The market share of electric cars during the year stands at 12.1% according to NGC Data, an increase of 31.6% compared to 2021.

Tesla Model Y is a hit in Europe since it was not sold this summer, we explain why

The sales figures for European electric cars for the month of July 2022 have just dropped. The Tesla Model Y still leads the dance, but it is greatly hampered by its competitors, French and…
