After the official announcement of Android 13, it is the turn of the operating system for vehicles, Android Automotive 13, to reveal its features. Will Google succeed in dethroning Apple and its CarPlay?

A version that might put Google back in the race for automotive OSes

That’s it, the next version of vehicle control systems from Google has been announced. Appointed – logical – Android Automotive 13, this system will therefore take over from Android 12L Automotive in vehicles that directly integrate this OS.

Because yes, Android Automotive must be pre-installed by the manufacturer, unlike Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, which can only be used by connecting a smartphone, therefore either Android or IOS. While the launch of the previous version took place only two months ago, Google has therefore already unveiled the upgrade of its OS.

Before the transition takes place definitively, the American giant has made an Android Open Source Project (AOSP) version available to companies. The opportunity for the latter’s developers to test the new features and improvements that should logically allow equipped vehicles to become even more connected than before.

In his summary of the publication, Google highlights several areas that they have worked on, such as cameras, connectivity, privacy or even user management. Of course, this AOSP version is not final, as it is simply used – for the moment – by developers of third-party companies that need to adapt their applications or software to the OS on the sidelines of its official release.

Invisible improvements, but improvements nonetheless

If most of you are familiar with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, well, Android Automotive is the advanced version of this type of operating system. Why ? Because’it is automatically integrated into a vehicle and does not need a connection with a smartphone to be activated. In fact, it is a much deeper and more advanced operating system than it appears, which almost allows you to end up with an interface close to a Tesla’s for example.

To give you an idea, in addition to infotainment tasks, such as messages, music or GPS navigation, Android Automotive is able to manage specific vehicle functions, such as air conditioning, heating or radio control.

Although this system is still not very present in our vehicles, Google tends to make it more accessible to car manufacturers. FYI, this OS is currently used mainly at Volvo, on certain vehicles from the General Motors group. (GMC, Cadillac, Chevy) but also at Renault (Megane E-tech and Austral).

Among the major improvements we therefore find in particular:

  • Camera
    • Android2 Camera API : Allows third-party applications to access one or more vehicle cameras without affecting the performance and behavior of the Extended View System (EVS).
  • Connection
    • Main Bluetooth integration : makes Automotive Bluetooth a module that allows updates independent of Android platform versions.
  • Privacy
    • Authorization model for auto : Changes to the permission model balance security, privacy, and user experience at runtime.
  • User management
    • Improved handling of user lifecycle events : Added a new user lifecycle filter to improve performance and simplify client code.
