Just a day after Samsung announced the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4, Xiaomi did the same in an attempt to overshadow the Korean reveal, and to some extent it succeeded. The Chinese company has unveiled the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2, a terminal that stands out mainly for its thinness.
Today, one of the biggest disadvantages of the foldable is precisely their width when folded. They take up a lot of space in the pocket, which can be uncomfortable for some consumers. That’s the price to pay for a device that, when unfolded, offers a large screen. However, Xiaomi has started to tackle this problem.
Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 meter. 11.2 millimeters thick when folded. It’s 4.6mm thinner than its biggest rival on the market, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4, which is 15.8mm thick. In both cases, however, the camera module is not taken into account.
To put the dimensions of the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 into context, the iPhone 13 is 7.65 millimeters thick. Of course, the difference with a classic smartphone is still significant, but what the Chinese manufacturer has achieved is a sign that foldables can meet this margin of improvement.
However, the thickness of foldable devices is also determined by the size of the charging port, which must be located on one of the two sides of the handset. In fact, the unfolded Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 is 5.4 millimeters thick. Thus, the company is gradually approaching the 3.74 mm USB-C.
At some point, foldable phone makers may have to make an important decision. Either reduce the thickness of only one side of the device because the port prevents it on the other, or do without USB-C and rely exclusively on wireless charging.
The Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 shines not only with its finesse.
Beyond the issue of dimensions, the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 also benefits from premium hardware. Starting with its internal 8.02-inch OLED Eco2 screen, 2K+ resolution and 120Hz variable refresh rate. Externally we find a 6.56-inch AMOLED E5 secondary panel, 2520 x 1080 pixel resolution and 120Hz.
At the heart of the device is a Snapdragon 8+ Gen1 processor and 12 GB of RAM. Storage, meanwhile, comes in 256GB, 512GB and 1TB variants.
The photographic part of the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2, developed in collaboration with. Leica is no exception. It has a triple configuration with 50 MP (main) + 13 MP (ultra wide angle) + 8 MP telephoto with 2x optical zoom. The front camera has a 20 megapixel lens.
The battery in the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 has a capacity of 4,500 mAh and support for fast charging up to 67 W. In terms of software, it comes with the latest version of Google’s operating system, Android 12. Of course, with the company’s personalization layer, MIUI.
The bad news is that we still don’t know if the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 will be officially available outside of China. Its price starts from 8,999 yuan for the 12GB / 256GB version, which is about 1.5 million euros. 1,290 euros or 26,500 Mexican pesos. It is available in the Asian market starting today.
