Bugatti’s W16 engine takes its last stand. The French luxury carmaker unveils the Bugatti W16 Mistral, an ultimate evolution of the Chiron powered by this block of sixteen W-shaped cylinders. Presented at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Élégance in the US, the Bugatti W16 Mistral will be the one and only roadster version of the Chiron, although it is a model in its own right according to the Molsheim company.

Visually, the connection to the Chiron is very present, but according to Bugatti, the design of the W16 Mistral is mainly inspired by the Type 57 Roadster Grand Raid from 1934. There are thus two aerodynamic headrests integrated into the bodywork and a bumper.- curved breezeway that takes up the V shape. A black and yellow livery paying homage to this 1930s roadster is also available, which should please fans of Bugatti’s history.

At the front, the appearance of this Bugatti W16 Mistral is characterized by a ribbed bonnet, which ends in air intakes, but above all in the famous horseshoe grill. The LED headlights have a four-line light signature in reference to the engine’s four turbos and four-wheel drive transmission.

In profile, we notice that the side windows of the Bugatti W16 Mistral fit directly into the continuity of the windshield, so much so that they form a real visor around the cabin. Separated from the engine air intake, the oil cooler air intake is located behind the doors.

The design of the rear lights has a function

At the rear, in addition to a huge diffuser and a central exhaust outlet, the W16 Mistral has an X-shaped light signature reminiscent of Bugatti Bolides.

It’s not just a design element, as these lights, in Bugatti’s words, “have the function of venting the side oil coolers through channels that connect the empty space between the X-beams to the side radiators”.

What is the maximum speed of the Bugatti W16 Mistral?

The engine in this Bugatti W16 Mistral is downright an endangered dinosaur.

As the car name suggests, it is therefore a W16 8.0 that develops 1,600 horsepower. The block is actually similar to that of the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+, the very one that reached 490.484 km/h in 2019.

Bugatti does not specify the exact performance of the W16 Mistral at the time of writing these lines. We simply know that its maximum speed is potentially greater than 420 km/h.

Inevitably, the interior of the supercar is not left out. The layout is similar to the cockpit of a Chiron, but Bugatti has used advanced materials, such as titanium and aluminum. The French automaker also says it has incorporated intricately woven leather, particularly in the door panels. The gear lever pays homage to the famous Bugatti roadsters by using a touch of wood and a groove insert “enclosing the famous sculpture of the dancing elephant by Rembrandt Bugatti”. This adorned the bonnet of the Bugatti Type 41 Royale.
