How to save fuel? 5 tips to reduce your petrol or diesel consumption

You will not have missed the fact that it has almost become a luxury to fill up with petrol or diesel. At some stations in the capital, a liter of petrol came close to €3, unheard of. The government offered a “rebate” of 18 cents, but it was complicated to see a liter of petrol drop below the €2 mark! This discount from the state will also increase to 30 centimes from 1eh September 2022 and until 31 December. In the meantime, you have to keep paying a high price to be able to drive, and it may be time to put into practice certain financial habits and above all to forget others that make you consume more than sense. Decryption.

The tyres, the car’s vital organs

Tires are just as important as your vehicle’s brakes, steering or engine. And they must be held with a certain pressure. Too little air in the tires = Danger! Does this remind you of anything? Here again, refer to the manufacturer’s recommendations and inflate your tires to the indicated number of lines. If you drive many kilometers on the highway or tow a caravan, you can add 0.2 bar to each tire, but no more! Over- or under-inflated tires are 10% more fuel on a long journey…

The road is not a Formula 1 track

By driving at full speed, you risk your life, and the lives of others. You are also playing Russian roulette with your license and using a lot more fuel than driving at a constant speed. If your vehicle has cruise control you must activate it at the approved speed, it’s not just there to look pretty!! Alternatively, you can also reduce your cruising speed by only 10 km/h. You will only lose a few minutes on your journey, but you will still save a few liters of fuel.

Turn off the engine when it stops

Opinions are divided on this issue, but it seems that “Start and Stop”, which is found on many cars, allows a saving of 10% of fuel, as well reduction of CO2 emissions from the exhaust. The only downside to this system is asking the starter a lot more. And if you don’t have Start and Stop, you can also stop the engine and restart it, even in traffic jams.

Car maintenance is essential

20% is the overconsumption you can achieve with a poorly maintained car. Maintenance of a vehicle absolutely needs to be done regularly and according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. In general, an engine oil change with oil and air filter changes is carried out every 15,000 kilometers, and a complete inspection every 30,000 kilometers. You can also, for better maintenance, use an injector cleaner every 10,000 kilometers. The more regularly your car is maintained, the longer you will keep it and the less it will consume!

Air conditioning? Yes, but not fully!

40° outside and 20° in your cabin? This is a very bad idea. Primarily, you are exposing yourself to a serious cold with a difference of 20°C in a few seconds when you get out of the car, but in addition you will consume much more than with air conditioning set to 5°C less than the outside temperature. ADEME estimated in 2020 that air conditioning consumed one liter more per 100 kilometers on the highway (and 2 liters in the city). If you are considering a Little Perpignan, it doesn’t matter a little more than 10 liters of water, i.e. 200 kilometers with a consumption of 5 l/100 kilometres!
