What is a hands-free kit?

A hands-free kit is a device that entered the market at the same time as mobile phones. It allows you to make and receive phone calls without having to manipulate the mobile phone or smartphone. There are three main categories:

  • The hands-free set, which takes the form of a pair of headphones, wired or wireless, equipped with a microphone, where the whole thing must be connected directly to the smartphone,
  • The hands-free speaker set intended to be installed in a car, generally on the driver’s side sun visor,
  • The hands-free kit that takes the form of a Bluetooth speaker equipped with a microphone.

The vast majority of hands-free kits on the market today are used wirelessly, meaning they need to be connected via Bluetooth to a smartphone to make them operational. You can find them at all prices and in all sizes. The hands-free kit is generally used for more safety and to offer more autonomy to the user.

Is the hands-free kit approved in the car?

First of all, you should know that manipulating a smartphone with your hands while driving is punishable by a 2nd class fine and a loss of 2 points on your driving license. But this is not the only point to remember: such a practice is simply very dangerous.

The use of a hands-free kit is authorized by French law. It is therefore possible to use such an accessory to answer the phone while driving. However, Article R.412-6 of the Highway Code still adds that the driver must be constantly “capable and able to carry out conveniently and without delay all the maneuvers for which he is responsible”. The use of a hands-free kit can be distracting and, although legal, should be practiced sparingly due to the risk of distraction it tends to generate.
