All segments of the automotive market have benefited from electrification in recent years. This ranges from small city cars to utility vehicles, sport utility vehicles and compact sedans. We have compiled a list of the best electric cars available.
Electric city cars
The surprise with the Renault Zoé
The Zoé represents Renault’s first electric model since 2012. It benefits from a major overhaul both exterior and interior and will be the second most popular city car in France in 2021. The finish remains flattering and certain recycled materials of textiles bring an original touch and cheerfulness to the cabin.
Although not luxurious, the car looks very technologically advanced. It integrates a new digital dashboard. It also has a standard center screen of around 7 or 9.3 inches, mimicking a Clio.
The big surprise is discovered when she is on the road. Zoé already offers a range of 360 km, which is more than enough for a walk in the city. It consumes little compared to the Peugeot e-208, its direct competitor, with only 17.2 kWh/100 km. In addition, its 52 kWh battery has a 160,000 km warranty (equivalent to 8 years of use).
Unfortunately, its load is limited to 50 kW, half of the other packs. Despite this handicap, the Renault Zoé is undoubtedly one of the best electric cars at the moment. This model covers all our needs to switch to an electric vehicle without breaking the bank. The purchase price amounts to 32,000 euros.
The more aggressive Peugeot e-208
The Peugeot e-208 stands out as the small electric city car and the most pleasant to drive at the moment, especially for its agility and dynamics. It is well equipped and benefits from a very good finish quality. This makes the e-208 a beautiful car. This model arrived in 2019 to compete with the Renault Zoé in this segment. The vehicle stands out with its appearance and more aggressive driving.
The car has a 136 hp engine that can deliver up to 100 kW maximum power. The Peugeot e-208 can reach a top speed of 150 km/h. It is capable of going from 0 to 100 km/h in just 8.1 seconds and has a consumption of 17.5 kWh/100 km.
This electric city car has a range of 340 km (according to the WLTP cycle) and a fast charging plug in CCS format. The latter can support an output of 100 kW. The Peugeot e-208 is powered by a 50 kWh battery with a warranty for 8 years and with a charging capacity of 70% at 160,000 km.
It is a very good alternative for adventures further from the city. It will be necessary to prepare 35,000 euros to acquire a model.
The unsurpassed Tesla Model 3
The Model 3 is known as the best-selling electric sedan in France and gets high marks for its performance on the road. The car follows the main lines of the Model S, but also has some unique features. One of them is a huge glass roof that stretches from the windshield to the rear. This improves the brightness of the vehicle and contributes to aerodynamics.
The Tesla Model 3 has a completely different interior than other cars with its minimalism. The original command center is just a 15-inch touchscreen, located in the middle. It is available in three versions: Performance, Long Range and Propulsion.
Tesla Model 3 Propulsion (2022) represents an electric sedan that can go up to 225 km/h and go from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.1 seconds. This model has a 60 kWh battery that can drive a maximum of 491 km. This energy accumulator supports a recharging of 170 kW in direct current. It benefits from a large network of “SuperChargers” terminals throughout France and Europe.
In terms of consumption, the result is staggering given that it is 14 kWh per 100 km. This model is offered for more than 50,000 euros in France.
As an alternative, the BMW i4 electric sedan can present itself as a solution for its performance. It can reach a speed of 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.5 seconds.
electric luxury cars
A luxury station wagon, the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo
The Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo is a sporty station wagon that focuses on performance rather than efficiency. It benefits from a very recent technology that makes it possible to offer a higher level of autonomy.
The Taycan comes in four versions: 4, 4S, Turbo and Turbo S. Our choice is therefore its estate version, which is luxurious. Apart from the very successful exterior, its finish remains impeccable. That’s a cut above what Tesla is used to offering.
The engine in the Taycan 4S Cross Turismo delivers an output of 360 kW (490 hp). This car is able to shoot down from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.1 seconds and show a torque of 650 Nm (with Launch Control).
Its battery has a range of approximately 400 km and has the potential to recharge with an output of 270 kW. With a compatible holder, it will take 22 minutes to recharge from 5-80%. On the road, the car consumes 22.6 kWh/100 km. Despite this greedy aspect, the Taycan Cross Turismo sells from 115,000 euros.
Its biggest competitor, the Mercedes EQS, combines smart luxury and electric mobility. This model has a range of 780 km on a single charge. With an estimated consumption of 19 kWh/100 km, this car could only reach 600 km. Its list price amounts to 127,250 euros, making the Mercedes EQS an ultra-luxurious option.
What about electric SUVs?
The Tesla Model Y remains the benchmark
Tesla’s electric SUV has just arrived in France. Not surprisingly, Model Y dominates the segment and becomes a reference even in the catalog of manufacturers. It is aesthetically similar to the Model 3, but has a more spacious interior.
The Tesla Model Y stands out thanks to its power and comfort. Only the twin engine configuration is available in France. This is the model:
- Long range: capable of 533 km on a full charge and a top speed of 217 km/h in 5.1 seconds
- Performance: which has the potential to cover a distance of 514 km WLTP. It goes from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds.
The actual energy capacity of the battery is not communicated. Internet users bet on 79 kWh. The Tesla Model Y remains one of the brand’s affordable models. Its price varies between 64,990 euros and 69,990 euros depending on the version.
There is also another alternative when it comes to electric SUVs. The Hyundai Kona stands out with its family use and its 450 km autonomy (consumption estimated at 14.3 kWh/100 km). This is enough for those who want to travel long distances. Its price is relatively reasonable compared to Tesla, which shows 40,000 euros.
The electric car market has been very successful in recent years. Now everyone can easily find one according to their taste and budget. For this catalogue, our selection criteria were based on performance, appearance, autonomy and without forgetting the price.
