On the occasion of the celebration of its 150th anniversary, emlyon business school wanted to confirm its entrepreneurial spirit, which “is articulated around four main dimensions,” explains Sylvie Jean, director of the Grande École program, all of which form the link between the preparatory class and the school. The first is Take a chance. For students, it is a chance to have chosen to do a preparation which is tantamount to requirements. An entrepreneur must also know how to take a chance. The other is Trust. Developing confidence is essential for competitions and an entrepreneur must have confidence to get started. The third is Take Height. Through the disciplines they cover and the difficult subjects they have to deal with, the preparatory students learn to gain height, just like an entrepreneur who encounters difficulties in his business creation and development. And finally, pay attention. Our mission is to train enlightened and responsible leaders to face the complex transformations of our society. »
A new design of Grande Ecole
PGE draws on this long and rich experience – emlyon business school is one of the oldest business schools in France – to develop the academic curriculum. “We wanted,” announces Sylvie Jean, “a new balance between the freedom of choice (courses, ways and places of learning, etc.) and the need to specialise. The academic curriculum is enriched with new courses, academic partnerships and specialization tracks. To weave very close links between reflection and action, the various teachings and research, the challenges and studies of this world: a real “learning” of the need to connect what connects to act, here and now. The first year is characterized by the basics of law, marketing, finance, management, etc. It allows for a smooth transition with the preparation class. In addition, the 4 DNA courses offered from the first year, which cannot be found anywhere else, allow you to develop new essential skills in an ever-changing world. The course applied research in social science (RECAPSS) and the Business Creation Project (PCE) left their mark on the students. The courses “Sustainable Futures” and “Prototype” are real discoveries to understand the world of the future. Finally, the 6-month international internship before the M1 allows you to connect with everything learned in 1st year, to step back, to really discover what you like or dislike before choosing a or more specializations. »
“In the master’s cycle, a real transformation took place,” continues the director of PGE. The basics are reinforced by issues of digital transformation, CSR and quality management. In M1, students who wish to do so can choose specialization tracks (corporate finance, market finance, marketing, supply chain, entrepreneurship, etc.) or à la carte electives. We give them freedom of choice. This new format allows you to mature your professional project without closing doors, to specialize step by step and to choose between 16 areas of specialization. »
Double degrees are also a characteristic of the school. They can of course prepare in France with École Centrale Lyon, Sciences Po Lyon, the Universities of Lyon II and III,… but also in Europe, Asia, North America and the Middle East. Another strong marker, inseparable from the Lyon establishment, is the employability of its graduates. emlyon business school is the second largest French school in the 2022 Times Higher Education World Ranking.
“Our Grande École program offers great freedom of choice with structuring and multiple specializations, recognizes Sylvie Jean. If assignments tell us that our diplomas have an “extra soul”, it is also in the life of associations and their attachment to the school that the difference is made. »
