Roidmi Eva test: an efficient robot vacuum cleaner, but not very thorough

Convenience of use

Eva makes us think of a small futuristic tank. Made of white and black plastic, topped with an impressive bumper, this robot is ready to fight the dust. And to do this, a laser range finder installed on its hood lets it move around its environment and detect obstacles in its path. This tower, on the other hand, makes it reach 10.6 cm in height, which can be complicated to pass under certain furniture, unlike the 7.7 cm of the Yeedi Vac 2 Pro.

Under its hood hides a dust collector with a capacity of 300 ml, on which a HEPA filter is hung. For comparison, it is half of the Dreame L10 Pro, which tops out at 600 ml. The robot vacuum cleaner is therefore required to multiply back and forth to empty this collector into the dust bag located at the bottom. These back and forth movements are also necessary to wet the mops on Eva because the robot does not carry a water tank. Next to the dust bag, the station has two containers of 4 l each: one filled with clean water and one responsible for recovering the dirty water after cleaning.

To collect the waste, a large brush takes place in the stomach of the Roidmi. It is made of rubber and nylon bristles and is effective on all surfaces, but we will return to this when we discuss the results of our suction test. A small side brush is also installed on the side of the unit and takes care of bringing the dust towards the central brush.

Two mops can be installed under the robot vacuum cleaner. The Chinese manufacturer informs us that they perform 180 revolutions per minute and exert a pressure of 12 N on the ground. They are attached to the unit with two magnets and detach from the support to go to the machine. The user therefore does not need to wash them by hand, unlike, for example, the pillows on the Dreame W10.

Finally, three buttons sit on top of the robot to start a full or targeted cleaning, or even to ask it to return to the station. Others are placed on the latter, ordering Roidmi Eva to empty her collector, wet her mops, return to her base, or start a cleaning. The station also includes a screen that alerts the user in the event of a maintenance issue. Icons appear especially when the dust bag is full, like the waste water tank, or when the battery is low and there is a lack of clean water. But the robot vacuum offers many more options when the user goes through the Roidmi mobile app.

Connection and app

The robot pairing procedure is very simple. You have to select the device from the list of offered products and then connect the vacuum cleaner to wifi. After that, Eva appears on the home screen and we immediately have access to its battery level and an overview of the cleaning session in progress. Four suction powers are offered by the manufacturer, as well as different cleaning modes: wash and vacuum, only wash or only vacuum. Namely that when the mops are installed, the robot cannot help but wash the floor. He is unable to lift his two skates and therefore has to walk around the mats.

As with most robotic vacuum cleaners, the user can define the area to be vacuumed. It selects one or more rooms in the home, draws a specific area or limits the space to be cleaned. An option called Point, redundant and not very useful we must admit, is also available and automatically draws an area of 1.6 x 1.6 m.

More options are available by clicking Next, e.g. routines, multistep, or unit component mode. The app then alerts the user when the sensors need to be cleaned or the filter needs to be changed.

From left to right: the parameters available by clicking Next, the multi-step setting and the health status of the robot components.

For our test, we installed the Roidmi application, but you should know that the user has the choice between it and Xiaomi Home. The latter is preferable for people with other connected objects from the Xiaomi ecosystem, because it allows you not to multiply apps on your mobile. Above all, the Xiaomi app is much more comfortable than the other: the menus are more intuitive, as are the main controls. In fact, the Roidmi app deserves some improvements to make it easier to find the robot’s capabilities and features.

Maintenance

As mentioned above, the docking station empties the robot’s dust collector, although it is possible to disable this option via the application. The user therefore need not worry about this step; he simply needs to change the dust bag when it is full.

This configuration is all the more comfortable as the collector is not very easy to remove and the debris inside sometimes falls inside the robot. Note that dirt can also be sown around the docking station on Eva’s return journey. To remedy this defect, Roidmi makes it possible to detach the inner tray of the station to clean it with water and prevent the spread of bacteria.

This gray tray can be cut off for easier washing.

Finally, we wanted to test the filtration performance of the robot vacuum cleaner. Remember that it is equipped with a HEPA filter located in the dust collector. To do this, we spread 20 g of cocoa on the ground and ask the device to swallow them. When its task is complete, it naturally returns to its base to empty its dust container. Then we weigh the filter again, and what a surprise to find that there are no longer any cocoa residues. Although the Roidmi’s filtration performance is excellent, it does not exempt the user from having to clean the filter with clean water when it is too clogged.

Navigation system

From the first cleaning sessions, we noticed that Eva returned to her base very easily. Each time he begins by walking around the room and then covers the rest of the surface by making zigzags. Its movements are fluid and its trajectory does not hesitate.

To better understand its navigation system, we spread piles of sawdust in several strategic places: under the radiator, in a corner of the room, next to the trash can, under the table, under a curtain and even in the middle of the room. center of the laboratory. Eva starts driving and we let it operate alone in our laboratory. After a few minutes we come back and unfortunately discover that most of the piles are still there.

The robot actually considers the curtains as walls and therefore does not bother to push them, even slightly, to vacuum behind them. Despite its side brush, we also find a lot of sawdust in the corner of the room and under a piece of furniture; a place that didn’t seem very difficult to clean. Finally, streaks are evident around the bottom and even in the middle of the room…

Now we observe Eve’s behavior against certain obstacles. In particular, Roidmi claims that his robot is capable of climbing over obstacles of 20mm – 15mm when equipped with mops. We confirm the statement of the Chinese manufacturer, as the vacuum cleaner passes without problems over the chair poles as well as on large cables. However, he decides to swallow the finer ones, at the risk of blocking his brush.

Strong points

  • Very complete docking station.

  • Decent absorbency.

  • Good stamina.

Weak points

  • Average surface coverage.

  • Poor washing performance.

How does grading work?

With its Eva, Roidmi promises an almost autonomous robot vacuum cleaner. The unit vacuums and washes the floor, while its station takes care of emptying its dust collector, moistening its two mops and washing them after the cleaning session. Equipped with a laser rangefinder, Eva navigates methodically. On the other hand, it has difficulty sucking in corners and under certain furniture, and its pads are not very effective.
