After the EOS 7D, the APS-C reflex cameras that focused on sports, Canon is back with the same philosophy in a mirrorless body, the EOS R7. Comfortably installed, the Fujifilm X-T4 must now face more modern and sharper competition.

Canon EOS R7: between efficiency and versatility, the right balance

Again, two different approaches collide in the ring. On the one hand, Fujifilm plays the nostalgia card with a design reminiscent of the heyday of film photography with lots of knobs and chrome finishes. On the other hand, Canon stays true to itself by offering a rather classic and efficient case. This first round is won by Fujifilm, which offers a more compact and ambitious camera, as well as a better defined viewfinder. Canon nevertheless defends itself with a simple and comfortable model to grasp, both for lovers of SLRs and hybrids.

Far from being a slug, the Fujifilm X-T4 is being overtaken by Canon’s latest addition. Worthy descendant of the EOS 7D Mark II, the EOS R7 is particularly fast, especially in low light, where it is twice as fast as its rival. It drives the point home with more advanced autofocus that delivers impressive face and eye tracking and an even faster burst. We describe the reasons for EOS R7’s superiority in a dedicated article, which we invite you to consult.

In terms of image quality, the CMOS BSI sensor in the Canon hybrid is better defined than the Fujifilm X-Trans 4, showing 32.5 megapixels against 26.1 Mpx. Both deliver excellent shots. Sharper with Canon in the low ISO values, the trend is reversed when the light comes up. However, the victory goes to the Canon EOS R7: its more sophisticated dynamic control allows more information to be recovered in both high and low light.

Same story on the video side, where the EOS R7 is essential thanks to its capture without cropping and its autofocus as effective in photo as in video. The Fujifilm X-T4 is second to none, also offering 4K DCI recording as well as a slow-motion mode at 240 fps in Full HD (versus 120 fps “only”).

Although powerful, the Fujifilm X-T4 is forced to bow to the EOS R7. The Canon cabinet is particularly sharp and stands out for its top speed, image quality and video mode. The Fujifilm hybrid holds for itself a neat and attractive design.
