A laptop battery has a limited lifespan. To reduce energy consumption and optimize the use of your PC’s battery, consider turning off the screen when the computer is idle. To do this, it is not necessary to close the hood.
Laptops allow you to turn off only their screen without shutting down the entire system. This makes it possible, on the one hand, to reduce energy and battery consumption, and on the other hand, not to lose documents or open files, especially if they have not yet been saved. For this, two methods are possible.
Turn off the computer screen using keyboard shortcuts
To turn off the computer screen manually, you can use keyboard shortcuts. Before that, hold down the Fn key, located between the Ctrl and Alt keys and simultaneously click the button used to start the computer. Thereby, only the screen turns off. Your computer will stay on and you will be able to find your files as you left them. To turn the screen back on, simply click the button used to start the computer.
Turn off the screen using computer settings
In addition to manually turning off the computer screen, it is possible to program its extinction. The screen turns off after a certain period of inactivity. For Windows 10 systems, go to “Settings” and click on the first icon that appears on the left named “System”. Then go to “Power & Sleep”. You will see settings dedicated to the screen, which allow you to choose after how many minutes of inactivity your screen can turn off, in case of battery operation, but also when it is connected to the mains.
In this menu it is also possible to choose by how many minutes of inactivity the computer may go into sleep mode. Standby allows us to keep the PC on while reducing its energy consumption. The screen then turns off, but our applications remain open, so we can continue where we left off. In fact, RAM, in this case, allows save data in use from the computer. You can also put your computer to sleep manually by closing the cover or through the On/Off menu.
What is the difference between turning off the screen and putting the computer to sleep?
There is a difference screen standby and computer standby. In the first case, only the screen is turned off when the computer is not used for a few minutes. On the other hand, when the computer is put to sleep, the screen is cut off. and the PC is put into “sleep” mode. This reduces battery consumption without having to turn off the computer.
