What you need to know

The Samsung Galaxy S line is one of Samsung’s flagship smartphone lines, along with the Galaxy Note series. Galaxy S smartphones come with advanced features such as high-resolution displays, fingerprint and iris scanners, and advanced cameras.

If you’re outside the US, Samsung has a comparable selection of phones for the international market. Samsung A phones aren’t available in the US, but they have similar specs to the Galaxy S line.

Since the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S in 2010, the company has released new models every year and shows no signs of stopping. A decade later, Samsung announced the S20 series of smartphones along with the Galaxy Z Flip.

Here is a summary of the main Samsung Galaxy S smartphone releases.

The Samsung Galaxy S20 lineup includes the phablet-like S20 Ultra, which has a 6.9-inch display, bringing it into the realm of the Galaxy Note. All three smartphones are compatible with 5G, which is being rolled out in the US.

The S20 phones also have impressive camera specs. The DepthVision camera in the S20 Plus and S20 Ultra can automatically measure depth and distance to the subject and add a professional touch to photos.

Samsung Galaxy S10, S10 Plus and S10e

Écran : AMOLED 6,1 pouces (S10), AMOLED 6,4 pouces (S10+), AMOLED 5,8 pouces (S10e)

Version initiale d'Android : 9.0 Pie
Version finale d'Android : Indéterminée
Date de sortie : mars 2019

The Samsung Galaxy S10 series is a step up from the S9 series. Its frame is very thin with a screen that curves over the edges of the smartphone, resulting in a screen-to-body ratio of 93.1%.

The S10 and S10+ also have an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor built into the glass. Simply place your thumb anywhere on the screen to unlock it. Another cool feature is that the S10 can act as a wireless charger for other compatible phones and accessories, like the wireless Samsung Buds.

The S10 comes in 128 or 512GB storage configurations with 8GB of RAM, while the S10+ also offers a 1TB option with 12GB of RAM.

The primary camera in the S10 and S10+ has three lenses for taking regular, telephoto and ultra-wide shots.

Finally, the S10e has a 5.8-inch screen and comes with the same memory and RAM configurations as the S10. It only has two rear cameras, not three, and lacks the in-display fingerprint sensor.

Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+

The Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ are similar to the S8 and S8+, with Infinity displays that use the entire screen. However, these smartphones have a smaller bottom bezel and a relocated fingerprint sensor on the rear panel.

The front cameras are also the same, but the S9+’s selfie camera has a dual lens. There’s a new video feature called “super slow-mo,” which records at up to 960 frames per second.

Overall performance is boosted by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 845 chipset. Like the S8 and S8+, the S9 and S9+ are water and dust resistant and have a microSD card slot and headphone jack. Both smartphones also support fast wireless charging.

Each smartphone’s fingerprint sensor is centered below the camera lens, which makes more sense than the S8’s sensor, which sits next to the camera lens. Like the latest iPhones, the Galaxy S9 and S9+ have stereo speakers, one in the earpiece and another at the bottom.

The Samsung Experience user interface, the successor to TouchWiz, brings some changes to the Android operating system. Finally, these smartphones have a new 3D Emoji feature, Samsung’s takeover of the Animoji feature from the iPhone X.

Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+

The Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ share many specifications, including:

Écran : Écrans Super AMOLED Quad HD+ d'une résolution de 2960 x 1440 avec écrans à bords incurvés.
Appareil photo arrière : 12 MP
Caméra avant : 8 MP
Version initiale d'Android : Android 7.0 Nougat

There are a few differences between the two smartphones. The S8+ phablet has a 6.2-inch screen compared to 5.8 inches for the S8. It also has a higher PPI (pixels per inch): 570 versus 529. Both were launched in April 2017.

Both smartphones look more like the Galaxy S7 Edge than the S7, with displays that wrap around the sides. Over a dozen software-customized Edge panels are available, along with several widgets (including a calculator, calendar, and notes app).

Other notable features that both the smartphones have:

Un scanner d'iris pour déverrouiller l'appareil.
La prise en charge de Bluetooth 5 vous permet d'envoyer du son à plusieurs appareils à la fois.
L'écran toujours actif affiche l'heure, la date et les notifications non lues, même en mode veille.
Bixby, l'assistant virtuel de Samsung, répond aux commandes vocales.
Un emplacement MicroSD qui accepte les cartes jusqu'à 256 Go.
Une résistance à l'eau et à la poussière.
Un port de charge USB-C.

Samsung Galaxy S7

Affichage : Super AMOLED de 5,1 pouces
Résolution : 1440 x 2560 @ 577ppi
Appareil photo avant : 5 MP
Caméra arrière : 12 MP
Type de chargeur : micro USB
Version initiale d'Android : 6.0 Marshmallow
Version finale d'Android : Indéterminée
Date de sortie : Mars 2016

The Samsung Galaxy S7 brings back some features from the S6, including the microSD card slot. It’s also water resistant, just like the S5, a feature the S6 didn’t have. Like the S6, it doesn’t have a removable battery.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 phablet was notorious for its battery explosion, which led to its ban by airlines and recall. The Galaxy S7 has a safer battery.

Like the S6, the S7 has a metal and glass back, but it tends to get damaged. It has a micro-USB charging port, not the new Type-C port, so you can use your old chargers.

The S7 ushered in the always-on display, which shows the clock, a calendar or a photo, as well as the phone’s battery levels, even when the device is in sleep mode.

Samsung also launched the Galaxy 7 Edge model, which features an improved Edge panel that can display up to 10 shortcuts to apps, contacts and actions, such as creating a new text message or launching the camera. .

Samsung Galaxy S6

Affichage : Super AMOLED de 5,1 pouces
Résolution : 2 560 x 1 440 @ 577ppi
Appareil photo avant : 5 MP
Caméra arrière : 16 MP
Type de chargeur : micro USB
Version initiale d'Android : 5.0 Lollipop
Version finale d'Android : 6.0 Marshmallow

With its glass and metal body, the Galaxy S6 is a cut above its predecessors in terms of design. It also has a touchscreen that’s sensitive enough to respond even when you’re wearing light gloves. The S6 improves its fingerprint scanner by moving it to the home button, making it easier to use than the S5’s screen.

It also took what many considered a step back with a non-removable battery and no microSD slot. The S6 is also not waterproof like its predecessor. Its rear camera is slightly prominent, but the front-facing camera has been increased from 2 to 5 megapixels.

The S6’s screen is the same size as the S5. However, it has a higher resolution and pixel density, resulting in a better experience.

The new features are:

Le scanner d'empreintes digitales déplacé vers le bouton d'accueil.
Appuyez deux fois sur le bouton d'accueil pour lancer l'appareil photo sans déverrouiller l'appareil.
Stabilisation optique de l'image dans l'appareil photo.
Compatible avec Samsung Pay, l'application de paiement mobile.

Samsung introduced the Edge series alongside the Galaxy S6 with the S6 Edge and Edge+ smartphones, whose screens roll up to one side to display notifications and other information.

Samsung Galaxy S5

Écran : Super AMOLED de 5,1 pouces
Résolution : 1080 x 1920 @ 432ppi
Appareil photo avant : 2 MP
Caméra arrière : 16 MP
Type de chargeur : micro USB
Version initiale d'Android : 4.4 KitKat
Version finale d'Android : 6.0 Marshmallow

A slight upgrade from the Galaxy S4, the Galaxy S5 has a higher-resolution rear camera (from 13 to 16 megapixels) and a slightly larger screen. The S5 added a fingerprint scanner, but it used the screen, not the home button, and was difficult to use.

It’s similar to the S4, with the same plastic construction, but has an indentation on the back that prevents fingerprints from building up.

Notable features include:
The fingerprint scanner stores profiles on three fingers.
Ultra HD video, i.e. 4K.
USB 3.0 compatibility for faster charging and data transfer.
Ultra power saving mode turns off most connections and changes the screen to grayscale.
Pulse measurement. Built-in camera flash module on the back of the phone. Tap your finger to read.
Children’s fashion. A sandbox experience with only trusted apps.

There are also a few variants of the S5, including two rugged models: the Samsung S5 Active (AT&T) and the Samsung Galaxy S5 Sport (Sprint). The Galaxy S5 Mini is a budget model with less advanced specs and a smaller 4.5-inch 720p display.

Samsung Galaxy S4

Écran : Super AMOLED de 5 pouces
Résolution : 1080 x 1920 @ 441ppi
Appareil photo avant : 2 MP
Caméra arrière : 13 MP
Type de chargeur : micro USB
Version initiale d'Android : 4.2 Jelly Bean
Version finale d'Android : 5.0 Marshmallow

The Samsung Galaxy S4 builds on the S3 with an upgraded rear camera from 8 to 13 megapixels. The front camera goes from 1.9 to 2 megapixels. It also got a quad-core processor and a slightly larger 5-inch screen.

The S4 ushered in Samsung’s multi-window split-screen mode, which allows users to view one or more compatible apps at the same time.

It also introduced lock screen widgets, which allow users to view certain notifications and other information without unlocking the device.

Like the S3, the S4 has a plastic body that is less likely to break. It’s not as attractive as the metal and glass bodies of competing smartphones. It also retains the MicroSD slot and removable battery.

Samsung Galaxy S III (also known as Samsung Galaxy S3)

Écran : Super AMOLED de 4,8 pouces
Résolution : 1 280 x 720 @ 306ppi
Caméra frontale : 1,9 MP
Caméra arrière : 8 MP
Type de chargeur : micro USB
Version initiale d'Android : 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich
Version finale d'Android : 4.4 KitKat

The Samsung Galaxy SIII (aka S3) is one of the first Galaxy S models in the series, following the original Galaxy S (2010) and Galaxy SII (2011). At the time, the 5.4-inch by 2.8-inch S3 was considered large by many people, but it feels small compared to its progressively larger successors.

The S3 had a plastic body, a dual-core processor and came with S Voice, the forerunner of Samsung’s Bixby virtual assistant. It also had a removable battery and a microSD slot.
