Unveiled in June 2022, the 90mm f/2.8 2X Ultra Macro APO is an ideal prime for macro photography. Available in E, Z, RF and L mount respectively for Sony, Nikon, Canon, but also Panasonic, Leica or Sigma, 90mm is intended for 24×36 hybrids on the market. For its testing, we passed it in our lab with a Sony Alpha 7R IV and its 61 megapixel sensor.

Macro photography, a world apart

As we are regularly reminded, macro photography must be distinguished from proxy photography. It is necessary to reach a magnification ratio of 1:1 in order to be part of this very special category. Beware of manufacturers who do not hesitate to play on words for marketing purposes…

But the macro world doesn’t stop at the 1:1 magnification ratio. Generally, macro photography is considered with a magnification ratio of 10:1. Then we quickly fall into the world of photomicrography.

A rare 2x magnification

Returning to the 90mm f/2.8 2X Ultra Macro APO, Laowa has the good idea to offer a magnification ratio of up to 2:1, which is quite rare. It is by placing the focus at the minimum distance that the greatest magnification is achieved. It is then only 20.5 cm.

Then you need to reach the point by getting closer to your subject and adjusting the distance without affecting the focus of the lens. For more precision, using a micrometer slide is an excellent choice whenever possible. In many situations, the use of a tripod is necessary to be able to reach the point without tearing your hair off, because it is not uncommon to have a zone of sharpness sub-millimeter in macro photography.

A practical label

To help the photographer, Laowa had the good taste to mark the barrel of the lens with the famous distance scale. If it is useful for focusing without autofocus or for using techniques related to hyperfocal, it is less interesting for macro photography. The manufacturer has done it right by adding markers from the maximum reproduction ratio of 2:1 to the much lower macro 0.1:1.

Of course, we tested the 90mm f/2.8 2X Ultra Macro APO as usual. In addition to the images from our separate tests and the usual photo excerpts from our scene, here are some excerpts taken in 2:1 and their respective full-size cropping.

Details invisible to the naked eye!

The kit is already pretty impressive, but we wanted to push the screw a little further with our test unit, the Alpha 7R IV (A7R IV). We photographed the screen of an iPhone 12 Pro at the maximum magnification ratio. Helped by the photobox’s 61 Mpx, the sub-pixels on the Oled screen are revealed to us!

To know a little more about macro photography, we have published several articles to better understand this fascinating activity, which allows us to reveal a small unsuspected world before our eyes. Of course, the full test of the Laowa 90mm f/2.8 2X Ultra Macro APO will be available soon to discover its performance in detail.
