6 things to check in your car after a heat wave

Extreme weather conditions, such as cold weather or heat waves, damage certain components of your car. How to do a check-up to ensure your health!

Associations of insurance companies show it almost every year: the number of requests for emergency assistance explodes with the passage of each heat wave. In fact, in addition to making your life sometimes very difficult to bear, heat waves have more harmful consequences for your car. So after the great heat wave that hit all of France in July 2022, it’s time to do it a little check of certain organs that are sensitive to high temperatures.

Rubber seals suffer during the heat wave

Around the doors and windows, under the hood, in the trunk… Rubber seals are everywhere in your car, but often overlooked. And in the summer, all the more during a heat wave, they suffer. Dry, hardened, cracked, bleached, they look sad and no longer fulfill their function. Your interior is less isolated, the doors creakthe windows can lose their tightness, not to mention the engine compartment… A little overhaul is in order.

If you think the joints look tired, luckily the maintenance is quite easy to do yourself. Clean them with a toothbrush, soapy water and a cloth. Then feed them with a silicone lubricant spray.

The cooling circuit

that cooling system is an essential organ for your car to function properly, especially during a heat wave of course. Don’t wait for overheating to worry about it! After driving during a heat wave, check coolant level, engine cold. If the expansion tank is almost empty, start by filling it up to the indicator shown. Next, try to locate a possible leak: a wet area in the engine’s bowels, cracked pipes around the radiator, or even a puddle on the ground.

If your coolant “disappears” quickly, a visit to your mechanic is in order.

The air conditioner

It is logical: during a heat wave, you require a lot of effort from your Air conditioning. And if we often think about having it maintained when the good weather approaches, this is less the case after the summer… A little check can be worth it though. Also check that there are no leaks under the hood and, above all, that the air conditioning is working correctly. Turn on the air conditioner to the lowest setting. The nozzles should blow very cold air within a few minutes. It must also be odorless. If you are unable to maintain a comfortable temperature, a check is in order.

The tires

Like rubber seals, tires can suffer from high heat. This is especially the case if you have recently been on holiday, traveled long distances or accidentally driven under inflated or heavily loaded. Heat can actually break down tire connections, and therefore weaken them. After the heat wave, examine them carefully. As always, check that they do not reach the wear indicator and that they hold their rated pressure. Next, examine the sidewalls and tread for cracks and other cracks.

Battery

It is well known, the battery suffers from the cold and can fail you in the heart of winter. But we know less, 12V batteries also do not support high heat very well.. In case of difficult starting, remember to request a battery diagnosis from your workshop, or do it yourself using a voltmeter. With the ignition off, the battery must have a voltage between 12.5 and 13.5V. If it doesn’t, that’s probably a sign that it needs to change soon. DOES NOT’don’t wait this winter

The windshield

The various advertisements hit it on TV and radio: In the middle of summer, when the air conditioning “breaks”, your windscreen breaks. Rest assured, it is far from automatic or even frequent. But after being on vacation and especially in the event of a heat wave, a small inspection of the condition of your windshield can do no harm. Clean it with, for example, a window cleaning product, then check for possible shocks. Also take the opportunity to top up with washer fluid, it’s sure to get a lot of use chasing away crushed bugs!
