Car: soon possible to run on used frying oil in France?

Rolling on used frying oil is becoming legal in France. As part of the consideration of the bill on purchasing power, the deputies approved the use of used cooking oil as fuel on the night of Thursday 21 to Friday 22 July. The measure stems from an amendment tabled by the EELV deputy, Julien Bayou, who had received a positive opinion from the government.

“It is illegal in France, but very widespread in Europe and in our regions, but secretly”, declared the representative of Hemicycle, highlighting the interest of this fuel for the wallet of the French people and the environment. But is this really the case? Explanations.

Which oils should be used?

The amendment allows the use of used cooking oil that is recovered as fuel. In other words, “oils produced from or derived from residues of fats of vegetable or animal origin, used for human consumption, in the food industry, in collective or commercial catering”indicates the text.

They can be used “pure or mixed” and will be “imposed domestic consumption tax at the rate applicable to diesel”clarifies the text.

Used cooking oil cannot be poured into the tank of your vehicle as is. It must first be decanted and filtered properly so as not to damage the engine. According to the amendment, “10 liters of used oil can give 8 liters of fuel”.

Which vehicles are compatible?

It is only diesel vehicles that were put into service before 2000. “Today, with modern vehicles, only decanted and filtered oil no longer works. It will simply be effective on older generation models or on agricultural equipment, for example.”explains Gregory Gendre, founder and coordinator of the association Roule ma frite 17, i The broadcast. They must also have a Bosch injection pump and be equipped with indirect injection.

If your vehicle meets these three conditions, it can run on oil. On its website, the Roule ma frite 31 association recommends only putting 10% in the tank first, rather outside the winter period, and observing how your vehicle reacts over a period of two to three months. If he responds well, you can increase to 30%. In addition to that, it is advisable to get in touch with mechanics specializing in the field.

Decanted and filtered, shortening can be used in a mixture “up to 30% in diesel engines of old design and up to 100% subject to certain adjustments”specifies the change.

What is the economic benefit?

“A liter of frying oil, well recycled, well filtered, is much cheaper than a liter of fuel at the pump”which currently exceeds 2 euros per liter, said Member of Parliament Julien Bayou during his speech in the semi-cycle.

However, this economic benefit remains uncertain. “On resale it costs €1.20 per litre, but if we add taxes, the liter is sold for around €2”, fears Alain Vernet, the chairman of the Roule Ma Frite 66 association, in Ouest France. In order for there to be an economic benefit, “A legislative framework must be established so that local operators like us can establish a collection network, a processing and distribution unit”he believes.

What is the benefit for the environment?

frying oil “rejects up to 90% fewer greenhouse gases than conventional diesel, emits far fewer fine particles and costs far less than fossil fuel”according to the amendment.

What are the risks of rolling with frying oil today?

Currently, rolling in vegetable oil is illegal and a customs offence. If, after sampling, a customs official finds that you are using oil as fuel, you can be fined 135 euros. In addition, diesel cars are insured to run on diesel only. Even in the event of a serious accident, it can turn against you.

After the deputies’ vote, it is now the senators’ turn to vote for this practice to become legal.
