Cité de l’espace unveils its summer program of events and late-night openings

The Cité de l’Espace, a point of reference in Europe for the dissemination of space and astronomical culture to the general public, reveals its summer programme. With extended opening hours and night openings until 23.00, visitors will be able to discover the varied offer of the Cité de l’espace (exhibitions, events, shows, films) including “Actualment dans l’ISS”, in the Carré de l’news , which highlights the European astronauts who is present in the International Space Station (ISS).

Young and old will also be able to meet the Martian robots exploring the planet Mars by participating in the immersive animation “The Rovers enter the scene” on the brand new Martian Terrain. In the evening, the Cité de l’Espace will put on its lights with the illumination of its gardens as well as a unique show on the Ariane rocket. During the day or in the evening, this summer again, the Cité de l’Espace promises many highlights for the family’s discovery of space and its exploration.

NIGHT TIMES: Take advantage of the long summer evenings to fill up on space exploration

Every Thursday, from 14 July to 18 August 2022, as well as Tuesdays 2, 9 and 16 August 2022, Cité de l’espace opens its doors at night and welcomes the public continuously from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Visitors will be able to discover all the Cité de l’Espace offers (exhibitions, workshops, shows, films, events) and benefit from unique highlights such as observing the sky through a telescope, the illumination of the garden and an unprecedented show on Ariane – the rocket.

10.00 to 23.00 around new activities: enjoy exhibitions, films, shows and non-stop activities as well as a new atmosphere on site.

NIGHT OF THE STARS: an evening dedicated to sky observation with the theme of exploration

Friday, August 5, 2022, Cité de l’espace invites the public to participate in the Night of the Stars. This event, started since 1991 by the Association Française d’Astronomie, offers everyone who is curious to observe stars, constellations, planets and other astronomical phenomena in different places in France. For this new edition, the Cité de l’Espace invites visitors from 19.00 to midnight for an evening in the heart of its gardens.

Musical and artistic entertainment
Workshops led by Planète Sciences Occitanie
This year, at the time of the imminent return of the Man on the Moon (Artemis mission) and eyes turned to Mars, the proposed theme is exploration.

A few months before the launch of the ARTEMIS lunar mission, which aims to return humans to the Moon, the Cité de l’Espace invites visitors to immerse themselves in the daily life of astronauts from the European Space Agency (ESA). With “Currently in the ISS” in the Carré de l’actu in the Cité de l’Espace, the European astronauts who are currently on a mission to the International Space Station (ISS) are honored. This summer, the public will be able to follow the experiments of Italian astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti.

In order to progress, both young and old can enter the MIR space station and participate in e.g. the workshop “How does ESA recruit its astronauts?” which, through tests and simulations, allows us to understand how European astronauts are selected.

The secrets behind the Martian terrain Cité de l’Espace are at the heart of space news. To enable visitors to understand the challenges of exploring the planet Mars, the Cité de l’Espace invites young and old to live an immersive experience by participating in the animation “The Rovers enter the scene” on the new Mars terrain. At the heart of an amphitheater with more than 250 seats, in a reconstruction of a real Martian crater, the Cité de l’Espace offers an innovative staging around the life-size replicas of two animated Mars rovers currently operating on Mars, PERSEVERANCE (NASA) and ZHURONG (China).
