Fifty years is something to celebrate. Renault 5 is celebrating this anniversary in 2022, which was launched in 1972. For the occasion, the French manufacturer is collaborating with designer and interior designer Pierre Gonalons. The latter provides its own interpretation of the famous city car. Renamed the Renault 5 Diamond, the small car becomes a show car – show version of a concept car – fully electric.

In order to design this new version of the Renault 5, Pierre Gonalons says that he was inspired by the decorative art, and especially by fine jewelry. If the original design of the Renault 5 is retained, the city car has some specific details. First of all, there is this body color, made using a three-layer paint “made of golden pigments on a pink base”. The painting is “covered with a frosted varnish” to get a changing look. Exposed to the sun, the Renault 5 Diamond is thus adorned with golden reflectors, while in the shade it gets bluish shades.

Renault 5 Diamond also sees its lines being refined and some elements being changed. The headlights and headlights come e.g. out of their location. The wheels come from the Alpine model, they are “smoothed and signed in their center by the sun dear to Pierre Gonalons”.

The designer talks about this collaboration and his taste for Renault 5:

I am very honored by Renault’s invitation to reinvent the mythical R5 on the occasion of its 50th anniversary. The brand gave me carte blanche to design my dream car. In my eyes, the R5 embodies a pop, optimistic, resolute contemporary life, and with the Renault 5 Diamond, I wanted to pay tribute to its revolutionary design while translating my universe of shapes and colors to the automotive world.

The door handles, window control or gear lever from a shortened ball in brass gilded with light gold. A seat is specifically reserved for a smartphone on the dashboard, which is made of horsehair fabric. The floor mats are made of mohair wool. The designer worked with the color and materials department of Renault’s design center as well as French companies such as Le Crin, Pinton and Bertin-Aubert to design this interior.

Renault does not communicate the details of the electric motor mounted on this new Renault 5 Diamond. However, it is known that the gear lever can be operated in three sequential positions, namely forward, neutral and reverse. The driver has in front of his eyes three round digital counters, which show the speed, time and level of battery charging. The doors are opened using a fingerprint reader.

Renault 5 Diamond signed Pierre Gonalons is the subject of an NFT collection unveiled in September 2022. The unique copy of the car and its dual in NFT format will be auctioned in 2022.
