Interview with Tessa Thompson: Thor Love And Thunder

Thor: Love and Thunder hits theaters on July 8 with Chris Hemsworth’s first solo film since 2017 Thor: Ragnarok and the character’s first appearance since being seen gallivant with Guardians of the Galaxy in Avengers: Endgame. Filmmaker Taika Waititi has certainly increased the rate of such a monumental return by gathering MCU characters from all corners and introducing one of the most terrifying villains to date: Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale).

But Thor must not face his frightening new opponent alone. In addition to the guards, Thor: Love and Thunder reintroduces Thor’s ex-girlfriend, Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), for the first time in almost a decade, apart from a performance in End the game. Plus, Thor’s good friend Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) is now king of New Asgard and has to decide what kind of ruler she should be in the face of such odds.

Screen Rant talked to Thompson about how it feels like the king of New Asgard and why the title challenges traditional gender roles. She also shared some of the city’s hottest tourist spots.

Screen speed: What is it like to be king?

Tessa Thompson: You know, it feels good.

Store. And…?

Tessa Thompson: [Laughs] I’m really into it. It’s funny because I’ve seen things on the internet from very confused people. They say, “King? But it’s a woman!” Some people were [kerfuffled].

But it really had to do with Thor being king. That would have been what he would have taken back [as], and then he did not bother to do the job. Basically, I could not handle the task. He said, “Do this work as a friend,” and so is the title. So she’s still a woman, but she happens to be king. And I really liked that, because the genre is a kind of construction after all. I think that’s cool.

It’s fun to be king! Valkyrie mostly likes to be king, but she hates paperwork and dislikes meetings. I think during the course of the film she will have to figure out what kind of king she wants to be. And the truth is, it has less to do with paperwork and more to do with what you pass on to your people in the spirit of Asgard. And that she understands it in her bones; she spent thousands of years protecting Asgard as a warrior. It is great for her to relax and put on a three-piece suit and hang out with her people.

One of my favorite things is that New Asgard is a tourist destination. If we’re going on a cruise to New Asgard, what do we do then?

Tessa Thompson: Oh, no matter what. I mean, what are you doing? Seafood Lots of nice seafood if you want oysters. if you want a good glass of wine. If you want to eat ice cream, we have opened a new ice cream shop; we have Dippin Dots … Ice cream of the future. If you want shopping, crafts, homemade jams – everything. You can take a walk. There is live theater.

I think you’re the first hero I think of to fight in your pajamas, specifically.

Tessa Thompson: Oh, that’s such a beautiful difference. It’s so cool. I’m really flattered.

In a The Phantom of the Opera way.

Tessa Thompson: Yes, that’s the case. I think, especially after the few years we have all been through, we have learned that there is so much we can do in our pajamas. In fact, we can do more than not. We know most things in pajamas, and we should keep doing that.

Fun fact: In most Zoom interviews, I do not wear pants.

Tessa Thompson: Yeah, sometimes it’s dangerous. I did this, and then you get up and say, “I’m so sorry.”
