Extension of the drought warning in the Alpes-Maritimes
Updated on 21/06/2022
The alert phase was triggered from 31 March 2022 and renewed on 29 April 2022 in the waters of La Brague, Var upstream, Var downstream, Paillon, Roya, Bévéra and the coastal areas of Menton. . In light of the many tensions reported over local resources, the prefect decided on May 23 to extend the drought warning phase to the entire department, with the exception of Siagne downstream, which at this stadium benefits from a secure reserve.
The Alpes-Maritimes department is facing an extraordinary drought situation this year.
The assessment of the recharging season (from September 2021 to March 2022) of the department is very deficit over the whole territory. The deficit of 40% to 60% compared to the normal (cumulative of 240 to 470 mm compared to a normal of 585 mm) is the second lowest value since 1959. Consequently, the observation of the drought indicators (measurement of river currents, soil moisture index, observation of dryness, groundwater level) led the prefect to trigger the drought alert phase from March 9, 2022 throughout the department.
Given the fact that the subsequent rainfall remained deficient and the river flow rates abnormally low, the alarm phase was triggered from 31 March 2022 and renewed on 29 April 2022 in the waters of La Brague, Var upstream, Var downstream, Paillon, Roya, Bévéra and the coastal areas of Menton. In light of the many tensions reported over local resources, the prefect decided on May 23 to extend the drought warning phase to the entire department, with the exception of Siagne downstream, which at this stadium benefits from a secure reserve.
Recent river flow measurements show that the flow of Estéron has now fallen below the crisis threshold, and has been so for more than 7 days in a row. In line with the drought action plan, after dematerialized consultation of the Water Resources Committee, and in the light of the weather forecast for the coming weeks (hot and dry weather), which does not allow this trend to reverse, The prefect has decided to trigger the crisis stage on the Estéron watershed, which concerns the following municipalities : Aiglun, Amirat, Ascros, Bézaudun-les-Alpes, Bouyon, Brianconnet, Collongues, Conségudes, Coursegoules, Cuébris, Gars, Gilette, Penne, Mas, Ferres, Mujouls, Pierrefeu, Revest-les-Roches, Roquesteron, La Roque- en-Provence, Saint-Antonin, Saint-Auban, Sallagriffon, Sigale, Toudon, Tourette-du-Château.
At the crisis stage, use-limiting measures are tightened (ban on day and night irrigation, 60% reduction, especially in industrial consumption).
The next Water Resources Committee will be held on June 23, 2022, it will take stock of the situation and, if necessary, propose the prefect to tighten or extend the restriction measures.
It is recalled that government services now carry out regular inspections, which are not only for educational purposes, but may give rise to reports of administrative breaches as well as minutes. In addition to the administrative consequences, anyone who violates the restrictive or prohibition measures can be punished with a fifth-class fine (a fine of EUR 1500 for any violation found).
Given the tense situations in several of the ward’s catchment areas, the prefecture calls for the utmost vigilance throughout the ward and recalls that appropriate actions and responsible behavior can save water. As the Ministry of Ecological Transformation reminds us, 25% of water consumption in France is in the domestic sphere. In times of drought, whether we are subject to restrictive measures or not, we must each more than ever control our daily water consumption with simple movements: favor showers, install water-saving sanitary equipment, run full-capacity washing machines, recycle rainwater, etc.
The Propluvia tool developed by the Ministry of Ecological Transformation allows any user to consult the zones put on alert and the associated restriction measures.
