2022 Lamborghini Huracán STO: hard to keep a cool head! Road test

It is rare that in a career as a journalist you can get behind the wheel of exotic cars of a Lamborghini caliber. Not easy to keep my head cool, I grew up with this kind of vehicle stuck to the walls of my room in the form of a frame and a poster. I recently had the chance to drive 2022 Lamborghini Huracan STO, a real race car made legal for the road. You can imagine that we can apply all the superlatives on such a car.

All about performance, very little about elegance

The 2022 Lamborghini Huracán STO, with a base price of $ 394,217, was created to pay tribute to the automaker’s racing heritage. Its name STO, for Super Trofeo Omologata, means that it is a race car approved for use on the road. Some racing series only accept vehicles that correspond to the road, and therefore this type of machine is created.

The Lamborghini Huracán STO benefits from much more extreme aerodynamic components, which is what really sets it apart from other Huracáns. Functionality precedes elegance, I love it. Pay yourself something other than a STO if you do not like it. The exterior is completely transformed, it is especially visible in the rear part due to an impressive fixed shark fin, a tunnel that starts on the roof and which directs a large amount of fresh air to the central engine. This tunnel also acts as a spoiler that stabilizes the car in turns.

The front is also characteristic with extra air intakes and its Cofango, a very light panel that includes screens and hood, completely designed in carbon fiber and which folds forward. The rendering of the STO is simply spectacular, the superstar effect being pushed a notch up by the steering wheel, almost to the same level as when I tested the V12-powered Aventador.

Huracán STO is also a weight reduction operation I had never seen so much carbon fiber in one place; in fact, it is used on more than 75% of body panels.

Everything to impress the gallery

Taking a seat on board is still a big challenge, on the one hand you have to be able to lean enough to slide into the sports seats, but once I was in place, I literally had the impression of being in a race car. Despite their peculiarity, the seats offered several adjustments, I quickly found a good driving position, well planted at an ideal angle to be held firmly in place in the highway ramps.

For the rest, the experience is typically Lamborghini with tilt control, a start button located under a red valve and an instrumentation screen (12.3 inches) approaching an F1. An 8.4-inch touch screen allows for control of most of the features, I was even surprised to find a sound system on board, but as you can imagine it remained off, the music came from behind instead.

The interior also benefits from a weight reduction. The door handles are replaced by belts. We also find carbon fiber everywhere: the floor, the door panels, the seats, the ventilation nozzles, everything. Only the Alcantara clothing on the steering wheel and dashboard provided an element of luxury, especially with its red stitching. Even the interior mats were carbon fiber, an option for $ 5,410 that shaves a few extra pounds.

In terms of visibility, it is zero at the rear, the rear tunnel blocks all visibility from the rearview mirror. I had to cheat with the side mirrors to be able to see behind me. A rear camera makes parking easier, thankfully.

Everyone will ask you if they can just take a seat on board, an experience in itself and I never get tired of seeing the smiles of people, especially children, as they practically make a dream come true.

A race car DNA

Once started, the naturally aspirated 5.2-liter V10 engine in the Huracán STO emits a rich sound, I knew right away that the experience would be multi-sensory. Straight from the hand, no need to tame the beast, I had the audacity to change the program change switch on the steering wheel from STO (Normal) to TROFEO (Track) mode, the sound and color change of the instrumentation made it clear to me that I should play with the fire. The PIOGGIA state (rain) is the “cozy” state.

A flick of the rudder to put first gear and I was on my way. Oddly enough, the car is quiet and very calm at low revs, especially if you let the gearbox change automatically. It’s only over 4,500 rpm that the engine comes to life and starts howling (the word is faint, I could be heard half a mile away), I wish it was more around 3,000 rpm, but that’s a guarantee for social peace with your neighbors.

With each press of the accelerator, which must be modulated to avoid gagging, the acceleration force is impressive. At 1,339 kilos (2,952 pounds), equivalent to a Toyota Corolla, for an advertised power of 640 horsepower (631 actually), the car offers a more than favorable weight-to-power ratio. The 417-pound-feet of torque literally nails you in the seat, and even at higher speeds, I felt the V10 never lost its breath. According to Lamborghini, the race car runs from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in just 3.0 seconds, it will take 9 seconds for 0 to 200.

No four-wheel drive in the case of STO, all torque is fed to the rear wheels to maximize the degree of performance. The car showed extreme stability, it manages to regain every millimeter of grip, the tires, 245/30 R20 front and 305/30 R20 rear, lose almost no cornering and the rear end never rolls. It literally sticks to the road and I shifted without weight transfer.

The other surprising technical component is the LDF (Lamborghini doppia frizione) 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox, which is impressively efficient. It’s accurate and just as effective, the changes are instantaneous, a real watch. When you gear down, everything is accompanied by a backlash from the exhaust, another little detail that gives chills.

Equally impressive are the ceramic-ceramic Brembo brakes, which stop the car as fast as it accelerates. You need to modulate them well, for a simple push swings your body forward. In terms of consumption, useful to know? At all.

In addition to mechanical components and performance, driving a Lamborghini instantly makes you a star. As soon as I swapped the keys for my test Toyota Tundra with those from Lambo (admit it’s something of a barter), my anonymity was over. I became a different person, everyone would talk to me about the car, take pictures of it, film it or just admire it up close. It is precisely this recognition that Lamborghini sells, and very few other brands do so to that extent.

Conclusion

Having had the chance to drive the Huracán a few times, I have to admit that the STO literally transforms the car. She pushes her DNA to the maximum, she literally surprised me throughout my experiment. This is without a doubt the one I would choose in the range.
