How do you cool your laptop properly in hot weather / heatwave? Our advice – LaptopSpirit

… and avoid overheating without going into exile in the basement or at the North Pole!

Since this week, temperatures have risen in the air (up to 39 °!), So they are breaking heat records and raising the specter of a new heat wave … If our body suffers, our laptops can also be charged. Through this article, we share some tips and tricks to best prepare your laptop to calmly meet high heat.

Dust off the fan

Many will no doubt have noticed that as soon as the thermometer exceeds 25 ° C, the fan on your laptop becomes more present. Nothing abnormal at all, the components give off heat faster, so the fan must evacuate it earlier. But if the latter tends to get carried away at the slightest request, this is undoubtedly a sign that it is necessary to clean it of the dust that has accumulated over the months.

To do this, the best solution is to use a small dust brush. Unfortunately, operation can quickly become very complex with ultrabooks and other newer laptops, where the smallest square centimeter is occupied by various components, making access to the fan (very) difficult.

Easier and much faster, as you do not have to disassemble the chassis, just use a “dry air bomb” (also called a dust bomb or compressed air bomb) to blow air through the air extractors. Of course, the efficiency will not be the same as with a disassembly in the “rules of art”, but three or four strokes should be enough to remove most of the dust. Small reminder, a dry air bomb should not be shaken before use and used in a vertical position. Prefer short presses (2/3 seconds in general) and let the bomb rest as soon as it gets cold to the touch.

Finally, it is obvious, but the ventilation openings on a laptop must never be blocked to ensure optimal operation, while preserving the life of the internal components. Therefore, be careful for fans of use on the bed with the duvet that goes up to the level of the keyboard …

Use a ventilated support

ventilated portable stand

If the cleaning session was not enough, try the ventilated support solution. Count around 20 euros for a beginner model, triple for advanced support with integrated speakers. On average, you can expect to lose five to ten degrees (which is already not insignificant).

Another benefit, and not least, these supports greatly enhance comfort when using the laptop that is lowered to the bottom of the sofa, both in terms of position and by protecting your thighs from the released heat .. .

In addition to the design and number of USB ports offered, do not forget when choosing that the larger the diameter, the more it will be able to rotate “slowly” and therefore be discreet. Amazon, LDLC, Materiel.net or even Top Achat have many models.

Limit performance

Another possible solution to limit the generated heat and / or noise pollution is to deliberately limit the performance of the processor. Most computers today offer a silent profile through the manufacturer’s utility. Its purpose is to reduce the speed of the fans, which at first glance can expose when you are in a heat wave. In reality, a silent profile will limit the performance of the processor / graphics card and therefore generate less heat. That’s what matters to us here.

Another solution, if your laptop does not have a manufacturer tool, reproduce the same principle, but directly under Windows. It is therefore necessary to create a power profile indicating that the maximum load on the processor must not exceed 80% (eg). To do this, under Windows 11, the easiest way is to press the Windows key + R and then enter “powercfg.cpl” and validate. Then click on “edit mode settings” and then on “edit advanced power settings”.

With basic use, such as surfing the web or watching a video, you will logically not notice any difference in performance, but you can still get a few degrees (and a few minutes of autonomy in passing). Keep in mind, however, that the more the processor becomes “limited”, the less it will heat up, but the less efficient it will also be.

If you have a recent laptop equipped with a dedicated graphics card and the integrated Intel / AMD chipset, check (thanks to GPUZ for example) that the latter is actually active when the use of Geforce is not necessary. Otherwise, force activation of the Intel chipset through the graphics driver.
