YouTube offers a golden bridge to French web stars

The Google subsidiary offers 100,000 euros a year to the 20 largest French Youtubers to broadcast their videos in preview and avoid seeing them enter the competition.

YouTube breaks the piggy bank to keep its stars. According to industry sources, Google’s subsidiary has recently approached the top 20 French Youtubers to offer them better terms. It proposes to guarantee them a minimum income of 100,000 euros per year. In return, Youtubers will agree to put their videos in preview on YouTube for a few days or weeks and after this period of exclusivity to let them stay with Google’s subsidiary. Similar proposals have already been made done for more than a year to American Youtubers.

The competition is increasing

If YouTube starts offering such a guaranteed minimum to its stars, it is not out of philanthropy, but out of fear of competition, that is on the rise. First there is the French Dailymotion, which since its takeover of Vivendi has exclusive access to internal content such as. Guignols – but not yet Studio Bagels, acquired two years ago but remained on YouTube. There is also the American container, which in the past year has offered its subscribers videos three days before they become free. To subscribe, the internet user has to pay $ 2.99 a month, part of which is donated to the author of the video. And above all, there is Facebook, where the number of videos watched is exploding: 8 billion a day worldwide. So far, these videos do not have ads, but Facebook does started revenue generation test.

Squeezie would already earn 480,000 euros a year

So far, Youtubers have received 55% of the advertising revenue from the platform, or 0.08 euro cents per. video viewing, an amount that is regularly declining (it was between 0.1 and 0.3 cents ago a few years ago).

However, these figures only apply to ads sold by YouTube. The YouTuber can also sell commercials before his video via a network called a multi-channel network (MCN), such as Mixicom, Studio Bagel, Golden Mustache or Finder Studios. This is then more targeted and sold for more: 1 euro cent per. display, and sometimes even up to 2 cents. At Studio Bagel or Finder Studios, these sales represent a good third of the seats.

Thanks to these transfers, Norman stated to earn 100,000 euros a year. But Squeezie would be close to the 480,000 euros annually, and Cyprien the 360,000 euros, according to. The echoes.

Remember that even in the fall of 2012, YouTube had advanced between 500,000 and one million euros to thirteen new channels to start the pump.

butter in spinach

But payments from YouTube represent only a small portion of Youtubers’ income. “It’s not at all enough to cover the cost of the videos,” says one YouTuber. To put butter in their spinach, these new teen stars also receive money from advertisers. In return, they participate in commercials, or – more or less discreetly – promote the advertiser in their videos, by mentioning it more or less explicitly in the credits or in the text that describes the video. At Studio Bagel or Finder Studios, these advertisers bring in twice as much as YouTube payouts.

A practice defended by Youtubers: “Internet users suspect that the advertiser has paid money, it emphasizes in the comments, and in any case, they greatly prefer a free model funded by advertising rather than a paid model”.

But practice is increasingly being rejected. The Department of Consumer Affairs (DGCCRF) informed World “study” the question. Faced with this, the major French MCNs plan to indicate that an advertiser has paid for their product to be displayed, by putting a P-logo on the video, as has already been done on television.

When asked, YouTube responded “constantly collaborating with creators to develop new content on YouTube”, but declined to describe its relationship with Youtubers.
