Not surprisingly, the French car market showed declining numbers in May 2022, for the 12th month in a row. A worrying observation that no manufacturer can find the solution to. Despite this, sales of new cars continue in France.
Conversely, the electric car sector is constantly growing and is not weakening. More than 15,000 100% electric vehicles found buyers in May. Which model will have aroused the most interest among individuals? The answer in this article.
The Peugeot 208 still leads passenger car sales
The best-selling passenger car throughout 2021 with just over 88,000 units sold, ahead of its main competitor Renault Clio V and its 85,247 units, the Peugeot 208 has always maintained the lead in sales since the beginning of the year.
During the first 5 months of 2022, the city car with the lion registers 5.8% market share with a total of 34,992 sales (from which we can remove the 6,851 sold electric models, ie a total of 28,141 sold Peugeot 208 thermal units), ie. 1.7 points more than the third generation Citroën C3 and Renault Clio V. The diamond model is in third place in this ranking with 24,356 units sold.
At the foot of the podium, of course, we find the Dacia Sandero, not far behind the C3 and Clio, as the Romanian model has sold 22,296 copies since the beginning of the year.
Stellantis and the Renault group leave no room for competition in the French market, as the first 10 places in this ranking of sales of new private vehicles since the beginning of this year are occupied by models from the two groups’ brands.
Thus, the Peugeot 2008, 308 and 3008 are placed in 5th, 7th and 8th place respectively, surrounded by the Renault Captur, the SUV Coupé Arkana and the second generation Duster.

Tesla and Zoé launched from the podium, Fiat 500 best-selling electric model in May
Little surprise on the side of the ranking of electric cars in May last year, no Tesla Model 3 or Renault Zoé on the podium. Even more, no Tesla model is among this top 10, with the Fiat 500 in the lead. Note the entrance to this ranking of the new Renault Mégane E-Tech, in 6th place, behind Dacia Spring.
With 2,129 units sold, the Fiat 500e is ahead of the Peugeot e-208 and Renault Twingo E-Tech. In 4th place comes Renault Zoé, which has experienced a drop of almost 19% in sales since the beginning of the year. Maybe a Mégane E-Tech effect? In any case, the new diamond crossover is number 6 with 758 units sold in May 2022.
At Tesla, the sharp rise in model prices will have had an immediate impact. Model 3 recorded an increase of almost 7,000 euros in France, which logically lowered sales figures.
In the rest of the rankings, the regulars are present with the Mini Cooper SE, Hyundai Kona Electric or Peugeot e-2008. The Citroën e-C4 closes this location.

The Dacia spring has remained at the top of electricity sales since the beginning of the year
During the year as a whole, it is Dacia Spring that maintains the lead in sales of electric cars in France with just over 7,800 units, ahead of the Fiat 500e and Peugeot e-208. The Tesla Model 3 is on this ranking and ahead of the Renault Zoé. During these first 5 months, 71,444 electric models have been registered in France.
Dacia is still at the top among individuals in the first quarter of 2022
Like last year, Sandero, despite also a declining second-hand market, is currently the best-selling private individual with 12,239 sales in the first quarter. If it falls by 32.5% compared to the same period last year, the news effect is enough for something. Nevertheless, it is quite far ahead of its cousin Clio and Peugeot 208, which are also down for sale among private individuals.
In addition to the podium, we find the diamond’s mini-SUV, Captur and the Romanian SUV Duster. Next comes the Tesla Model 3, Ford Puma, Peugeot 2008, Citroën C3 and Dacia Spring in 10th place, which in addition to being the best-selling new electric car already attracts many customers in the used market.
A second-hand market that is still very tight due to rising demand and declining supply, even at specialist companies such as bymycar. Click here to see the selection of used cars.
