Asus TUF A15 TUF507RM-HQ083W review: a gaming laptop powered by a Ryzen 7 6800H and an excellent GeForce RTX 3060

Construction

The design of the TUF A15 is evolving compared to 2021 with a more sober chassis, plain black and without raised line. Everything stays in plastic, but we have to admit that the chassis is not very stiff and gives a somewhat low-end look. The hood is now adorned with the brand logo and no longer the TUF inscription, which is not so bad.

The cap now shows the brand logo.

The touchpad is now classic and no longer consists of a pad and two dedicated clicks. He sinks a little too much under pressure, but a computer game is not intended to be used without a mouse. On the keyboard side, we find the transparent design of the ZQSD keys, and typing is generally comfortable and fairly quiet. Unlike advanced models, the RGB backlight is not adjustable key by key, and you will have to be content with a single color zone. However, we can apply some effects to it via the Armory Crate software to customize the keyboard and the colors we want to display.

The backlight cannot be adjusted key by key.

The entire keyboard.

For connectivity, everything is there or almost: on the left edge, two USB-C ports, including a DisplayPort compatible, a USB-A 3.2 port, an Ethernet, an HDMI and a mini-jack connector; on the right edge, only a USB-A port. Bluetooth 5.2 and Wi-Fi 6 provide fast network connectivity. The webcam records at 720p and the image quality is poor in both low light and good lighting conditions, where manufacturers generally do not bother on dedicated gaming computers.

As for the components, you need to remove a lot of Phillips screws to access them. Good news, the RAM modules can be changed, so can the M.2 SSD and the battery. An essential point when it comes to repairing or changing its configuration.

The PC is scalable, a good point.

This PC did well on the heat side. For intensive use, there is a hot spot towards the center of the chassis under the screen with a peak of 54 ° C, but it all remains generally cool. However, the PC is very noisy when the turbo mode is activated. We noted around 53 dB, whether it was in games or under the CineBench R23. In other words, it’s better to play with headphones …

Performance

The Asus TUF A15 TUF507RM-HQ083W has an eight-core AMD Ryzen 7 6800H processor clocked at 3.2 GHz with a boost of 4.7 GHz. However, its 45 W TDP, which can go up to 57 W during demanding calculations, does not come close to Intel processors, which can reach double (at the expense of significant heating). It is also here connected with a 512 GB SSD and 16 GB DDR5 RAM.

With a score of 147 on our CPU performance index, the Ryzen 7 6800H puts the 11th generation of Intel processors and AMD Ryzen 5000s in the wind. It offers a performance boost of around 16% compared to the Ryzen 7 5800H, which we have tested before, but it performs worse than its direct competitor, the Intel Core i7-12700H, which has many more cores (14 in total). To date, Intel has therefore regained control, but this 6800H is nonetheless one of the most efficient processors on the market. To go further and get more details about the results obtained in different applications, we recommend reading our dedicated article:

A quick word about the PC’s SSD, which enjoys decent read speeds (3 GB / s on average), but far from the best M.2. In writing, however, the results are less good with 1.5 GB / s on average.

Game

The PC under Assassin's Creed.

The PC below Assassin’s Creed.

We have already tested Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 3060 long, wide and across, and now know roughly what we can expect, but here we managed to surprise. It has a 140W TGP which is excellent for this GPU.

Its 180 GPU score is the best we could get with an RTX 3060, almost 30% better than last year’s Legion 5’s 130W. Also interesting, our Asus TUF A15 offers 5% more performance compared to the RTX 3060 from the Acer Nitro 5, yet given the same 140W TGP. The difference can no doubt be attributed to the GPU / CPU pair, which here is in favor of the Ryzen 7 6800H. The graphics card does not have to be ashamed of the RTX 3070 Ti from Asus Strix Scar, which we tested, but of course it can not compete with an RTX 3080 Ti.

To be more specific, we were able to play Assassin’s Creed Valhalla in full HD at 83 fps and most games in our test over 60 fps. Activate raytracing will affect performance a lot, but DLSS will definitely help, although some very demanding titles like it Cyberpunk 2077 and Metro Exodus will be less fluid in any case. Hard to take advantage of the 165 Hz screen under these conditions unless you reduce the graphics or play low-power games such as Fortnite Where Counter attack.

Mobility / Autonomy

With its 15.6 inches, a weight of 2.2 kg and a chassis of 35.4 x 25.1 x 2.5 cm, the TUF A15 carries well in a backpack, although of course it takes up more space than an office model. Count 733 g for its charger, all equally clumsy.

The charger is impressive as on most gaming PCs.

During our test of autonomy, the PC did not last long, after only lasting 4 hours and 26 minutes of video playback on Netflix under Chrome, backlighting and Bluetooth disabled, headphones connected and the volume set to 50%. Other models perform much better, although this type of computer often stays connected to enjoy maximum in-game performance.

How does grading work?

The Asus TUF A15 (TUF507RM-HQ083W) offers excellent processing performance, powered by an AMD Ryzen 7 6800H, and a great gaming experience with a non-rocking GeForce RTX 3060. It is certainly necessary to compose with a chassis that is not among the most ingenious and a disappointing autonomy, but it is the price to pay for a fare that does not fly off precisely.
