Preview Four Emblem Warriors Three Hopes: As good as Zelda Hyrule Warriors? First impression!
Five years after the release of the first Fire Emblem Warriors, Koei Tecmo and Omega Force are offering a new spin-off in Nintendo’s tactical role-playing game universe. While the original title was a crossover with characters from various fire emblems, this second episode takes place in the Three Houses world, the popular Switch opus. We were able to play it for a while and we give you our first impression!

For many years, the publisher Koei Tecmo has made a specialty in denying all kinds of licenses in a type of game called Musô. Basically, it’s a subgenre of beat’em up, where you meet hundreds of enemies on a battlefield. All the fun comes from the fact that the combinations are often very impressive and it only takes a few hits to defeat most basic enemies.
If Dynasty Warriors was the first series to invent this formula, its developers, Omega Force, used this recipe for many other licenses. One Piece: Pirate Warriors, Dragon Quest Heroes, Attack on Titan: Wings of Freedom, Persona 5 Strikers, Berserk and the Band of the Hawk … Many have been there! Recently, even Nintendo lent itself to the game with Hyrule Warriors, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity and especially Fire Emblem Warriors, whose new episode, Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes, interests us today.
A reunion with the universe of the three houses
In the original game released in 2020, there were characters from Fire Emblem: Awakening as well as Fire Emblem Fates, Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia. For this new adventure, Omega Force has decided to focus exclusively on Fire Emblem: Three Houses, The Switch episode, which had enjoyed great success with the public. Instead of putting ourselves in Byleth’s shoes, who played the role of professor at Garreg Mach Monastery, this time we play a mercenary with purple hair named Shez. Without ties, the latter has powerful and mysterious powers, all accompanied by Arval, a mysterious creature who saved his life in the past. During his walks, our hero will meet Ashen Demon, a member of Yalt’s mercenaries who looks like two drops of water to Byleth from Three Houses. After being beaten by the latter, Shez will have only one obsession: to defeat this mysterious creature.
Some time later, Shez meets the three future rulers of the nations of Fódlan: Edelgard, princess and next empress of the Aztec empire, Dimitri, crown prince of the Holy Kingdom Faerghus, and Claude, heir to the Riegan family. leader of the Leicester Alliance. During the prologue, our mercenary ends up integrating the Garreg Mach monastery, and the player must therefore choose between one of the three houses, which gives access to three different scenarios. In reality, all of this is only the beginning of the game, because the heart of the story takes place two years later, where the characters we knew in Three Houses have grown up and the continent of Fódlan is in disarray. As we are in the middle of a war, we alternate throughout the adventure between fighting on the battlefield and returning to camp to rest.
Repetitive but still effective fight
Like any title belonging to the Musô series, Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes is a game where you spend most of your time fighting on a battlefield. Like the first Fire Emblem Warriors, the sequences are still impressive, and you feel powerful, sweeping dozens of enemies as soon as you hit the smallest.. To bring diversity, this spin-off depends on the many different classes, all of which have unique attacks, but also on the shift of characters on the go, allowing you to go from one corner of the battlefield to another without transition. To defeat the most powerful enemies, you will have to exploit their vulnerabilities until they break their defenses to finish them off with a critical hit. Certain aspects of the Fire Emblem are still there, such as the triangle of weapons, orders, or the system of assistants, which allows you to have someone by your side to fight. Finally, each weapon also has skills that can only be used to a limited extent, as in the traditional episodes of the tactical role-playing game series.
If the fights are moments of great spectacle, the defects in the Musô formula are still there. Despite the various classes and weapons available, the gameplay remains repetitive and we are constantly experiencing using the same most effective sequences to defeat enemies. At the heart of the struggle, the action is sometimes confusing, making it difficult to read the screen, especially with an interface that is so filled with elements that do not make room for what is really happening in front of us. In terms of graphics and frame rate, however, we find a more compelling result than Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity.. If the title is very fluid in the camp and against a small number of enemies on the battlefield, the framerate drops in front of an entire army without slowing down to the point that it can not be played, even in cooperating multiplayer together. To prevent any fall, the game reduces the quality of the graphics depending on what happens on the screen, which is a pretty smart way not to break the dynamics of the action.
Relationships at the heart of the experience
After a fight, we are often entitled to a tunnel of dialogue to move forward in the story before returning to camp. This is where we find the second important aspect of the Fire Emblem experience: managing your relationships. Just like in Three Houses, which in itself is heavily inspired by Persona 5, the ties you share with the characters are at the center. because the closer you need, the more effective they will be in the field. For example, when a fighter accompanies you as an assistant, they protect you and unleash special attacks with you to make them even more powerful. To have such strong ties, there are many activities available at the camp to spend time with your favorite heroes, such as doing chores, going on expeditions, giving gifts …
But the camp is not only a place to have appointments and meet people, as it is above all where you prepare for your next missions. This includes training to become more powerful or change class, but also the purchase of new weapons and items that will prove useful on the battlefield. If you decide to cook, you will be able to take advantage of additional effects for your next mission, whether it is offensive or defensive. Finally, building management is also important because it allows you to develop your camp so that your structures are more efficient or give you access to better features.
Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes seems to have all the cards in hand to delight Three House fans. In addition to finding the characters, this spin-off incorporates certain mechanics that made the original title successful, such as the important space that relationships were given. The Omega Forces game, however, is an effective Musô, with qualities like its boosted action and its impressive sequences, but also its flaws, such as its repetition and its messy side. But on the technical side, we’re pleasantly surprised to find that the game has held up so far, despite everything happening on screen. In any case, we can not wait until June 24 to get our fingers in this action version of Fire Emblem, which looks promising.
