A group of people were hit by a car in the center of Berlin on Wednesday morning, June 8, 2022. One person lost his life and more than a dozen others were injured. The driver was arrested. Here’s what we know.
A vehicle drove into a window
A metallic gray Renault Clio crashed on Wednesday approx. near Zoo station.
The man driving the car first hit passers-by “before continuing his race” in about 150 to 200 m and then complete it “in a window”said a police officer, Thilo Cablitz, to the Continuous News Channel N-tv.
“I was sitting by the fountain and heard a loud noise so I saw someone flying through the air (crushed by the car)”told a witness on the spot atAFP. Another witness assured that the driver was driving in “a group of students” age “15 to 16 years old” before he runs a red light and continues his run “at too high a speed”.
The car registered in Berlin was visible in the window after the accident, the passenger door open.
One dead and more than a dozen wounded
One person was killed and eight others seriously injured. Rescuers spoke “more than a dozen wounded”including five “between life and death” and three “seriously injured”according to firefighters. Everyone was driven to the hospital.
“There are several injured, some seriously, as well as in the current condition a dead person”tweeted Berlin police.
According to several media outlets, the deceased victim is a teacher who accompanied a group of students.
About 130 police officers were deployed to the scene, as well as 80 firefighters and a helicopter.
The arrested driver
The driver tried to flee before being overpowered by passers-by and then arrested by police, a police officer, Thilo Cablitz, said at the scene. He is a 29-year-old German-Armenian, he added. According to the German daily newspaper Picture , the man is known to the police and lives in Berlin. He is currently being questioned.
“We do not yet know if it is an accident or an intentional act”, Berlin police wrote on their Twitter account. It could even be “a medical emergency”.
“The investigation is underway and it is too early to speculate on the motives” of the act, said a spokesman for the Interior Ministry.
A symbolic place
Facts took place near the Memorial Church, a landmark monument in the western part of the German capital, located on one of Berlin’s busiest commercial arteries, the Kurfürstendamm.
It is also located right next to the square where an Islamist ram truck attack was carried out on 19 December 2016 at a Christmas market in which 12 people were killed.
