“Ghost” – COD Modern Warfare 2

With a new episode every year since 2005, the Call of Duty license has had its ups and downs. As often, it has won (Modern Warfare 2 in 2009, Black Ops right after), but it has also sometimes disappointed a lot. We think of the futuristic exaggeration of Infinite Warfare or the absence of a campaign in Black Ops 4. But that was before Modern Warfare from 2019 arrived and got everyone to agree. The Infinity Ward studio seemed to have found the perfect recipe with one gameplay at its highest and a disturbingly realistic solo. Suffice it to say that the opuses from 2020-2021 did not provide the same consensus. So you understand why Modern Warfare 2 – scheduled for October 28 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series – is expected. So much the better we were able to learn more about the subject!

Special unit 141 left

Did you like the Modern Warfare story? This suite sets the stage three years after the events of the previous opus. The famous Special Unit 141, made up of stars from the franchise like John Price or Ghost, continues to fight around the world. But of course, a new threat will sharpen the nose tip. On the program: a terrorist plot against the United States on a large scale, via targets worldwide. During our interview with Activision and Infinity Ward, we learned that it would involve “the death of a foreign general” as well as the “Mexican special forces”. No further information yet.

What we do know, though, is that Infinity Ward is going to lay down focus on the team itself, to be interested in the connections of its members and the way in which they can lead the collective upwards or – on the contrary – downwards. Brian Bloom, who oversees the authorship of Modern Warfare 2, summed up this vision in one sentence: “the people you know can help you the most and hurt you the most”. We can therefore well imagine that the visions of each other collide, insofar as Unit 141 welcomes newcomers, in addition to the importance of guaranteeing the success of the mission. All in all, we better understand the slogan of Modern Warfare 2 already revealed: “The Ultimate Weapon is Team”; “The ultimate weapon is the team” literally.

The idea of Modern Warfare (2019, editor’s note) was “where do you draw the line to reach your goals”, while in this sequel it is “how ready will you be to become like your enemy to beat him – Jeff Negus, Narrative Director at Modern Warfare 2

Purpose: varied gameplay

In the wake, we could see more gameplay phases taken from the campaign. So as it stands, it’s hard to judge the graphic qualities of this Modern Warfare 2. There are still a lot of things that need to be refined – it was a pre-alpha build – and the video compression during the presentation did not help. But nothing to ruin what we saw. In addition to the varied decor, Infinity Ward has, above all, set itemphasis on variation in the game. According to Pat Kelly, director of the studio, it would “never be seen” for his part. That’s fine, but what does it really look like?

The first mission we saw – “Nightware” – was in line with the latest Modern Warfare: a night phase, probably in the Middle East, stealth, night glasses and action. We no doubt found the brutal realism we had already seen three years ago. But the other sequences seemed more original to us. Especially one in the port of Amsterdam (“there are sailors singing”, as they say) with a strong quite different gameplay, much freer: everything happens in the water and you have to dive to be discreet, take the enemies from behind. We are here far from the long corridors with special effects in all directions.

In yet another case, for an abseiling excerpt on the facade of a skyscraper, Infinity Ward talks about a little riddle to clear your way. Inevitably, your movements are limited here, and the choice of goal is crucial. But the position of the body is also important because if you approach the situation upside down, you will see the scene upside down, but your body will be less exposed. Conversely, you will see everything in the right way, but will be vulnerable. Eventually, the team showed us a vehicle phase where it is not only a matter of shooting from the roof, but also of jumping from car to car, taking the wheel and moving forward in the heart of the convoy.

Great news

Of course, all of these missions led Infinity Ward and Activision to rethink the mechanics of Modern Warfare. Like the water engine that will also be used in the title’s multiplayer mode as well as “Warzone 2.0”. Beyond all the graphic part and the behavior of the waves, it is even the trajectory of the spheres will be affected. Basically, the farther the player is from their goal, the less fast and effective their shots will be. The same goes for vehicles. Players will soon be able to pull a weapon out of the window to aim forward – even from the driver’s seat – get up on the roof and then jump off at will. Finally, artificial intelligence will win in realism and autonomy, and the adaptation of weapons is becoming even richer.

An even stronger multi

More generally, Infinity Ward teams are looking for new gameplay with flexible mechanics to let players express their creativity. Thus, other details make their entrance, such as.Dive”(Suddenly diving forward); that “The ledge hangs”, Which allows you to hang on to the edge of a platform before climbing on it again. New equipment is also part of the game: “tactical camera“, a sticky camera for observing enemies, which can create a camera network.” Drill charges “, a tool that punches a hole in the wall to send a grenade to the other side.”DDOS”: Wave that neutralizes surrounding objects, including vehicles. “Inflatable Decoy”: Inflatable lure that opens when an enemy approaches and gives birth to a plastic soldier, points at your opponent and diverts their attention.

As it stands, it’s unclear how important these additions will be to Modern Warfare 2’s multiplayer. But what can be said is that they promise more lively and varied battles than ever, with phases underwater as well as stunts in the air. Finally, Infinity Ward addressed two points: new multiplayer maps and modes. As for the first, the maps will be divided into two types: “Battle Maps”, “Core Maps” for battles sometimes on a large scale, sometimes close to each other. They look really varied. And the icing on the cake then, mature. Yes, the famous one Rainbow Six Siege-like comes to Call of Duty, with “Prisoner Rescue”, where you will have to rescue hostages or eliminate all opponents. The latest addition is called “Knockout” (6v6), where players will compete to hold a bag full of tickets after one minute of hours. Once you get it, the whole server will know it. Something to renew the Modern Warfare experience in general.
