Commit to the decolonization of public space with Lush

From 8 to 15 June, Lush launches in collaboration with the associations Mémoires et Partages, Change ASBL and Lëtz Rise Up “Let’s decolonize public space“.

What is the decolonization of public space?

What’s the problem? The way in which (re) is presentedcolonial history in the public space (ie the urban environment accessible to all). Colonial history is thus criticized for minimizing the atrocities inflicted on those who were persecuted during this period:

glorification of people who participated in colonization (statues, street names, etc.) without their role being properly explained to the population.

under-representation of victims

The problem? This distorts the image and interpretation of colonial history as it really was. 3 associations (Mémoires et Partages, Change ASBL and Lëtz Rise Up) then got the idea to launch the campaign “Let’s decolonize public space” with the following purpose: recognition of colonial history and rehabilitation of the memory of the black slave trade during this colonization period. Their field of activity?

  • Memories and Shares (France) is building “House against Slavery”, a social and urban project to respond to new issues of remembrance, which would welcome exchanges, debates, artistic expressions on the historical issues of colonization and slavery, but also contemporary issues , descendants of these stories, such as racism.
  • Change ASBL (Belgium) raises awareness, educates, informs the public and creates a connection between members of the African diaspora and any other society.
  • Lëtz Rise Up (Luxembourg) – through the “Decolonize Luxembourg” campaign – organizes especially “decolonial” guided tours in the city of Luxembourg.

4 ways to support the decolonization of public space with Lush

And because the defense of human rights is everyone’s cause, we can also support this fight. Especially thanks to the funds that are in place of the Lush brand, which is still very committed!

  • 1 / Buy a bath bomb to fund the action of the associations

The brand has envisioned a bath bomb to raise money. This is the “Knowledge” charity bath bomb, with a scent that mixes floral and vanilla notes, of which all sales (excluding VAT) will be donated to the 3 associations.

‘Knowledge’ charity bath bomb. Lush cosmetics. € 9.

  • 2 / Engage elected officials

In each Lush store, a dedicated letter intended for elected representatives is available (written by Mémoires et Partages for France, Change ASBL for Belgium and Lëtz Rise Up for Luxembourg). This calls for elected officials to make the right decisions to truly decolonize public space. All the letters will be sent by Lush to the affected elected representatives at the end of the campaign … So we go to Lush closest to you to put your signature on and contribute your stone to the building!

  • 3 / Use your social networks

With the hashtag # Decolonization2022we give strength to the “Let’s decolonize public space” campaign, we fuel the debate … and we challenge elected officials.

  • 4 / Sign the signature collection of memories and shares

… if you are France, Change ASBL (Belgium) or Lëtz Rise Up (Luxembourg). The goal ? Require concrete action from the municipalities to initiate the renewal of the public space. In France, the petition written by Memories and Shares Bordeaux municipality asks for a more comprehensive memorial plaque with more information about the colonial history in front of the statue of Modeste Testas – African woman, born around 1765, subject to slavery, bought by Bordeaux merchants -.
