Toulousain Nuwo offers to exchange his company car for a bicycle

Replacing the company car with a company bike? This is what Nuwo offers. The Toulouse company was launched in 2021 and wants to decarbonize home-work travel and encourage employees to step on the pedals instead of driving to cover short distances.

“The original idea was to create a power business. What decided us was when we noticed that 60% of the home work of less than five kilometers was done by car. The company bike could be used by the employee for his home-to “work, but also personal and professional travel. This is a market that has not been addressed until now. The only way to have a bike was either personal purchase or personal rental”, explains Nicolas Lutzi, co-founder of the start-up Nuwo.

How does the Nuwo service work? The company or the employee in question contacts the company. After discussions with decision makers, human resources or mobility players, the Toulouse startup helps the employee find the bike that suits his use and draws up a lease.

Nuwo thus offers a wide range of bicycles, from traditional to electric, including cargo for parents who have to drop off their child at school before going to the office, for example, or even folding bicycles for those who do not have a storage place for the night or who practice intermodality. “We offer beautiful quality bikes where the riding positions are comfortable. We have exceptional bicycles in circulation worth more than 5,000 euros“, Assures the manager.

A favorable price for the employee and his company

The price of the service depends on the choice of bike as well as the duration of the contract. Part of the bill is borne by the employer and another by the employee. For example, for a traditional mechanical bike suitable for regular home-business travel, the monthly rent will be 15 euros for the company and the rest will be charged at 8 euros for the employee. For an electric bicycle, generally the most in-demand model, the share for the employee is around 30 euros, the company’s share around fifty euros. The offer includes insurance (breakage and theft) and maintenance to avoid negligent maintenance of the bike, the main cause of accidents.

“In order to benefit from a 25% tax exemption thanks to the Mobility Orientation Act, which dates from 2009, we recommend three-year contracts for companies. The financial dimension of employees can be an important decision-making factor given the price of petrol.”

At the end of the contract, the start-up offers the employee to buy the bike back at a favorable price to give it a new life, otherwise it will be used again in a used circuit or for rent, if that condition allows it.

Start the offer in cities that love cycling

The Nuwo service was officially launched in 2022 and is available in the Toulouse region but also in certain cities in Occitanie. The young shooter wants to expand its offering beyond its region of origin in cities that have a significant cycling budget. She is particularly interested in the capital. Based in Pink City, along the Canal du Midi, the company would address these future markets, geographically remote from headquarters through “partner bike shops“.

“We are interested in companies that have a national presence to develop in the cities where they are established. We want to go where our customers need us and according to the opportunities.”

Become the French leader in functional bikes

The company, which is just in the process of its commercial development, has gained its first customers. So far, the typical profile of the latter is a company with a size of less than 100 employees, where the decision-making process is faster. By 2022, it aims to sign about ten contracts, each involving about ten users on average.

“This represents many benefits for companies. It will have an impact on CSR, on the global ecology. But it is also a good solution in terms of attractiveness, brand image and quality of life in the workplace. Companies have a role to play. In the current craze around the bike, ”he says.

The company must recruit two people in 2022 in the commercial and marketing part to expand its workforce by six employees. Over the coming years, depending on growth, Nuwo wants to create about ten jobs a year. From now on, the goal is to accelerate commercial development to become “short term“the French leader in functional bicycles in a market”stuttering“.

“Our ambition is to convert people who take the car to a bike. We want to make it easier for the employee who wants to switch to a bike, to take action, to put them in the right conditions to take the leap. We can clearly see that ecological and economic conditions encourage employees to rethink their form of travel and companies to find their role in this ecosystem “, concludes Nicolas Lutzi.
