The best video games that came out while you were too busy playing ‘The Fire Ring’

Elden Ring joined the very limited club of video games that were able to absorb all the attention from critics and the public for several months. As GTA V (2013), Zelda: Breath of the Wild (2017) or Read Dead Redemption 2 (2018) before him, the latest creation from the FromSoftware studio was raised to status as a masterpiece as soon as it was released on February 25th on consoles and PC. However, it has overshadowed new features that also deserve a focus: here is our selection.

“Citizen Sleeping”

Mix between the interactive novel and the puzzle, Citizen Sleeping puts us in place of a robot in which we have injected a human consciousness and which must try to survive in a space station where factions and bandits of all kinds collide. Extremely talkative, but remarkably well written, Citizen Sleeping builds a successful portrait gallery and manages to captivate throughout its short, multi-ending storyline. However, it is reserved for English speakers, in the absence of (currently) a French translation.

Adventure with a capital “A” and cuteness with a capital “M”. This is the proposal from Tunic, where it’s a matter of embodying a fox dressed in green in search of a great treasure. We find the same nostalgic formula as in The door of death (2021): a strong tribute to The Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past (1991) adorned with demanding struggles by Dark souls (2011). But with its levels full of secrets and its unforgettable universe, it’s clear we’re facing video games with an amazing J » and a large “V” “.

Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga »

Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga reviews (and paints) three trilogies Star wars in one title. Alone or in duos, we find ourselves in turn embodying most of the heroes of the franchise, from the original episode of George Lucas (numbered IV, of course) to episode IX of JJ Abrams. Solve puzzles, explore landscapes that have become cult, and fight above all the great figures of the empire … TT Games revisits with joy and good humor a somewhat tried but very effective formula.

At night, the bright lights of a giant refinery prevent the inhabitants of the city of Norco from seeing the stars’ light. This is how game developer Geography of Robots’ first creation begins, a dystopian work inspired by the city of the same name located on the outskirts of New Orleans. After several years of absence and the death of her mother, Kay returns to her hometown and discovers that her brother has disappeared. The atmosphere evokes trip melancholy Kentucky Road Zero and the neo-noir atmosphere of blade runner. With a very humble device – pixel art and studies in point and click – this narrative experience enchanted us with its poetic and political glimpses.

“Shift shaft”

We thought we were finally vaccinated against match-3, these interchangeable puzzles à la candy destruction. Dog variant Replace shaft succeeded in overcoming our immune system by offering an unprecedented mechanism: the ability to tilt the grid by 90º or 180º to multiply the combinations. Sober graphics and unstoppable mechanics, this title – with no integrated purchases or explosions of colors to hypnotize us – re-injects a good portion of strategy into this genre that we thought was shattered.

Available for € 3 on iOS and Android.

“Run: The World in-between”

Nightmare-like difficulty, a nervous soundtrack, simple controls and an original concept that is everything you can hope for from a platform game with Run: The World in-between. The title from the Team Run studio shines with its very precise movements, its hectic pace and the permanent excitement it imposes on the player. IN race, you must cross quite short levels consisting of recurring obstacles, but which change the order of appearance with each test. This originality makes all the difficulties of the game: impossible to completely rely on the muscle memory that one can do in a Heavenly. Devilish but effective.

Available for € 10 on Nintendo Switch and PC.

“Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe”

Stanley is back in this polished version of the incomparable The Stanley parable (2013). Despite the addition of about thirty minutes of extra content, employee 427’s trajectory has (almost) not changed: this model employee sees his routine disrupted by the disappearance of his colleagues. He sets out in search of them and follows the instructions of an invisible narrator who will gradually lose control … Newcomers will enjoy the narrative pirouettes and the reflexivity of the medium that made everything salty in the original version. Nothing revolutionary, though, for those who own the title released nine years ago.

Available for € 22 on PC and Nintendo Switch.
