here are the inspirations for the next Star Wars series according to its creator

Earlier this month, we unveiled these details regarding the release schedule for the next Star Wars series Disney +the opportunity to get news of the arrival of the long-awaited third season of The Mandalorianbut also newcomers like Andor, Ahsoka or The acolyte. And precisely with regard to the latter series co-creator and producer, Leslye Headlandreveals a little more about the upcoming series that sets in The Star Wars universe.

a return to the basics

The next series The acolytewhich was to begin filming later this year, will be the first series Star wars in live-action taking place outside the Skywalker saga. Although Lucasfilm still keeps most of the details of the series secret, Headland recently claimed that the series should return to the basics of the original trilogy. Because even though it will follow in the footsteps of what Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have done with the other series in the franchise at Disney +, The acolyte will draw heavily from the samurai films and martial arts films that inspired George Lucas in the first place.

During an interview with Vanity FairHeadland therefore returned to the series’ inspirations The acolyte, explain why she preferred a more restrained and personal approach. She said:

Jon Favreau said that when you work in this world, you want to go back to what inspired George. There were the western movies and of course the samurai movies from Akira Kurosawa, and the fact that he originally suggested Obi-Wan Kenobi to Toshiro Mifune.

So I turned to martial arts movies, to something more personal and less global and galactic plots. These warriors performed deeply personal missions with people who felt wronged and needed to correct their mistakes. The Wu xia piano films and martial arts films of the King Hu and Shaw brothers, such as The Golden Swallow and A touch of Zen. They are monks who are also martial arts heroes.

And in another article published by Vanity Fair, Kathleen Kennedy, President of Lucasfilmclapped Headland’s dedication to exploring the Star Wars Legends universe, formerly known as the Star Wars Expanded Universe (EU). She said:

She’s a huge Star Wars fan. The wonderful thing about Leslye is that she knows everything. She has read countless books about the expanded universe, and there are small parts she draws inspiration from that no one has yet explored in storytelling on screen.

The acolyte will thus make it possible discover a period still unknown to the general public, the high republicbut above all will make it possible to get out of the Skywalker saga, which is increasingly considered by fans as a straitjacket that harms the evolution of the Star Wars universe, yet so enormously.

Star Wars series will therefore take place during the last days of the High Republic, almost 200 years before the events from the movie Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999). She should therefore explore how the influence of the dark side developed before Palpatine’s emergence.

Headland then explained that she felt some pressure while developing the series, but was happy not to have to use older characters like Luke Skywalker. She explained that she prefers to avoid telling stories with these characters because of the intensity and iconography around them.. Headland concluded by emphasizing the series’ new surroundings, declaring that it intends to fully explore the time and appearance of the galaxy during this prosperous period of the Republic and the Jedi Order, as well as the first signs of their downfall.

I feel a lot of pressure, but strangely enough, I also feel a huge amount of freedom because I do not feel that I am dealing with hereditary characters, which is much more frightening. I mean, you could not pay me enough money to try to be in Luke Skywalker’s timeline. For me, it would be “No thanks!”. It’s just too intense. There is too much iconography and intensity with these special characters. While I’m there, I think I’m telling a story that is more in a period that we do not know much about. Let’s stay here a little and see what Star Wars looks like when the good guys are in charge. What happens ? We know what it leads to, so let’s look into it.

Headland had already teased details about the Jedi Order, which will be present in The acolyte, describes in particular the costumes of the Jediwhich will be different from those found from the prequel, as well as how their designs may be meaningful to the series’ story. Headland described the clothes of the Jedi Order as being in pristine condition, consisting of white and gold, much like the models seen in other High Republic stories. She then suggested that this was due to the fact that the Jedi Order did not play such an active role in the galaxy, unlike its later counterpart in Star Wars history, because the Order at that time participated in very few conflicts.

Series The acolyte could turn out to be one of the most unique Star Wars projects, as it is far away from the stories that were previously brought to our screens. Headland’s series also seems distinct from other tales of the High Republic, as most of the currently published works covering this period are set just under a hundred years before the events of the new series. And as Lucasfilm and Disney move away from the Skywalker saga, Headland no longer has to limit its history to a well-known cast and a well-known story, thus leaving room for his own vision of the Star Wars universe.
