Seoul, the capital of South Korea, is already one of the smartest cities in the world. Over 95% of the population has 4G and 5G access, and the city has free Wi-Fi at over 100,000 hotspots. The city is now considering building a metaverse across all parts of the city government. This city-wide metaverse ecosystem is known as the “Metaverse Seoul”.
The project utilizes digital twins, virtual reality and collaboration with the aim of improving the city’s services, planning and administration, as well as promoting virtual tourism in the city.
The development of the Metaverse Seoul ecosystem is already under way. Users can already create avatars on the platform and explore a virtual re-creation of the mayor’s office.
The city’s long-term vision for the metaverse ecosystem is to integrate support for business development services, education and support for urban services, including filing complaints, requests for real estate information and tax returns. The city administration hopes to make the meta-verse an open and free service for the citizens.
The city says the project aims to make it easier for residents to connect with public services and each other. The project also aims to overcome time, space and language constraints. Finally, through the metaverse ecosystem, the city aims to explore new ways to improve user satisfaction and experience.
The Metaverse platform aims to help consolidate access to services in the city. The platform will also allow the city to easily simplify and expand services that leverage 3D digital twins to improve the city’s public infrastructure, report fires and improve access to local security images.
There is, for example, an S-Map service with a digital twin for real-time fire monitoring, urban planning and windway analysis. The platform also has a security service, the Ansimi App, which connects users to Seoul police departments, allowing police to then utilize camera feeds and location data to speed up the investigation.
The team has a five-year plan to increase the platform’s capabilities in a number of key areas. The Metaverse Seoul ecosystem already offers a business service portal that gives startups a place in the metaverse where they can showcase new business ideas as well as services.
There is also an education portal with 34 campus cities offering coaching, networking and collaboration opportunities.
There is virtual tourism that local and international tourists can use to try current and historical attractions.
In the future, Metaverse Seoul will also have the infrastructure to support major festivals and museum exhibitions in the city.
Many major players in the metaverse are already thinking of it as a future workplace, and this project also wants to integrate virtual coworking spaces that will allow city citizens to work externally in this metaverse, as they currently do in a real office.
Going forward, the projects want to add an “AI-driven official” who will work in a meta-office and work closely with others to provide public services, according to CIO Jong-Soo Park of the City’s Policy Office. Seoul Smart City.
