what future for the franchise in cinemas and at Disney +?

On the occasion of Star Wars Day, a look back at the various projects under development at Disney for the small and large screen.

It’s May 4th. A banal day for ordinary mortals, but one that has special significance for lightsaber lovers. It is on this date that we celebrate the very distant galaxy Star wars. The festivities, born of a pun with one of the most iconic replicas of the franchise, are also and above all an opportunity for many to have a marathon of the various films released between 1977 and 2019.

Above all, it is time for us to take stock of what the license has in store for us over the next few years. In the cinema, but also at Disney +, Star Wars has far from said its last word. A brief overview of the productions announced by Lucasfilm.

A well-deserved break from the big screen

In 2015, Lucasfilm revived the Star Wars saga under the direction of JJ Abrams. After a remarkable passage in the Star Trek galaxy, the director’s mission is to lead a new franchise directly linked to the first films. In front of his camera, spectators discover a gallery of old and new protagonists, descendants of those discovered in 1977 in A New Hope.

At the heart of this intrigue, Rey, a young orphan who discovers a very strong connection with the Force. As she tries to escape the first-order minions, she crosses paths with a certain Finn, a former Stormtrooper, who wants to help her escape the terrible Kylo Ren.

But artistic disagreements will force the director to deviate from the project to make room for another filmmaker: Rian Johnson. He will stage The Last Jedi before Abrams returns to end the epic with The Rise of Skywalker.

At the same time, Disney and Lucasfilm unveiled two spin-offs, dedicated respectively to a rebel team that will play a crucial role in the saga, and to the famous Han Solo. If the first, baptized Rogue onewill find a special place in the hearts of the fans, the other will have a hard time winning at the box office.

It will only report $ 393.2 million, against just over a billion for the rest of the films of the latest vintage. It must be said that the way to Solo: A Star Wars story even in the dark rooms were strewn with pitfalls. Change of director, reduced promotional campaign and colossal budget, it must be believed that the stars were not in line to make this spin-off a real success.

Since the end of the main story, in December 2019, Disney has therefore reduced the sails on dark spaces. The company had also quickly announced that it wanted to take the time to review its copy before re-invading our cinemas.

Rogue Squadron still planned for 2023

Rogue Squadron is one of Lucasfilm’s long-announced film projects. For the production, the studio is calling on Patty Jenkins. The one to whom we owe the saga wonder Woman at Warner Bros. were to land in theaters in December 2023, as tradition demands in the galaxy far, far away.

We know very little about the plot, except that it should have a link to the eponymous video games. As a reminder, Rogue Squadron was released in 1998 on PC and Nintendo 64. Players took on the role of Luke Skywalker, commander of the Rogue Squadron consisting of elite X-Wing pilots. However, there is little chance that we will find the good Luke on our screens.

Mark Hamill, we say it with great respect, is no longer really old enough to play ruthless young drivers. Unless Lucasfilm uses technology to give it a little makeover. That’s how we could find him Boba Fett-bogen.

Filming has not yet started, Jenkins is busy with the third part of Wonder-Woman’s adventure. It is also rumored that the relationship between the filmmaker and the studios would be quite strained. If Disney has not announced a postponement, it’s very hard to imagine finding the saga on our screens in almost two years.

In addition, Taika Waititi is also announced behind the camera for a feature film that is still quite mysterious. In August last year, the director of Thor: Ragnarok confided that if nothing had been written yet, he had the main lines of his plot, which according to his own admission is very similar to him.

At Disney +, it’s an avalanche of new productions

If Star Wars in the cinema is discreet, it’s a different story on the small screen. Lucasfilm seems to want to shape the future of its platform platform. In a few days it will be possible to discover Obi-Wan Kenobi with Ewan McGregor in the title role.

17 years after Revenge of the Sith, the actor will resume one of the iconic roles of his career. He will find Hayden Christensen, who will again camp Darth Vader. Ten years after his fight against Anakin, Obi-Wan keeps an eye on the young Luke Skywalker from a distance. But the empire is on the hunt for the last Jedi in the galaxy, and its peace will be disturbed by the arrival of the great inquisitor. A new trailer has just been shared in the May 4 celebration.

Then we had to find Cassian Andor in a first solo adventure. Andor is interested in the past of the character portrayed by Diego Luna. Few plot details have been leaked, but we do not have to wait very long. It is announced for the year 2022, probably during the summer.

Then that’s enough The Mandalorian which ends the year in style with season 3 of Din Djarin’s and Grogus’ adventures. Besides, we were soon to see the team off The bad batch for a season 2.

All that remains is to wish you a beautiful Star Wars day in front of your favorite production of the license. Most movies and series are available on Disney +, with the exception of The Rise of Skywalker.
